The Brookwood Memorial stands in the large Military Cemetery, which forms part of the London Necropolis at Brookwood, west of Woking, 48 kilometres by road from London.
The Memorial is an open rotunda of Portland stone, standing on a low paved platform reached by broad flights of steps alternating with raised flower bastions.
The garden in which the Memorial stands is at the south end of the Canadian Section (Second World War) of Brookwood Military Cemetery, on the far side of St. Lawrence Avenue - the highway leading in from the main entrance on the Pirbright road.

Brookwood is located in the county of Surrey, England and is 6 miles north of Guildford, and 9 miles northeast of Aldershot.
Brookwood, in Surrey, which is the resting place of over four hundred US servicemen from the 1914-18 conflict, and of course Madingley near Cambridge, which is home of the American fallen from the 1939-45 conflict.
In this respect the memorial is somewhat unique, as it provides the focus for current generations to remember the brave men of the United States Army National guard, who have contributed through their sacrifices, to the liberation of France, twice in as many generations.

The memorial was unveiled by Field Marshal Lord Plumer of Messines in the presence of King Albert I of the Belgians on 24th July 1927.
The memorial proper is a large earth and stone cairn, surmounted by a defiant bronze caribou (the badge of the Newfoundland Regiment).
The memorial was designed to fly two flags at its summit, the Union Flag and the French flag, and was unveiled by the Prince of Wales on 1st August 1932 in the presence of M Albert Lebrun, President of the French Republic.

The United Kingdom 1914-1918 Memorial stands at the north-eastern end of the 1914-1918 Plot.
BROOKWOOD MILITARY CEMETERY is owned by the Commission and is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the United Kingdom, covering approximately 37 acres.
In 1917, an area of land in Brookwood Cemetery (The London Necropolis) was set aside for the burial of men and women of the forces of the Commonwealth and Americans, who had died, many of battle wounds, in the London district.

Additionally there are 468 American war dead, the dead from other nationalities represented here, and other casualties buried elsewhere in the grounds of Brookwood Cemetery.
Then there are those servicemen and servicewomen with no known graves who are commemorated on the Brookwood Memorial (3,500 casualties from the Second World War - see photograph above) and the Memorial Chapel in the American section (563 casualties from the First World War - see photograph below).
The Brookwood Cemetery Society organises guided walks during the course of the year, some of which feature some of these areas.

The memorial is in the form of a plaque mounted inside the village church – St Mary’s.
The memorial lists those who laid down their lives during WWI, with the names of the WWII fallen added at a later date.

Robert Benoist was arrested on June 18, 1944 and shipped to (additional info and facts about Buchenwald) Buchenwald (A penal camp where political prisoners or prisoners of war are confined (usually under harsh conditions)) concentration camp where he was executed on September 9, 1944.
Following (A republic in central Europe; split into East German and West Germany after World War II and reunited in 1990) Germany's surrender, on September 9, 1945 the date of the first anniversary of his death, the "Coupe Robert Benoist" automobile race was held in Paris in his memory.
In his honor, the village of Auffargis named a street after him and it is there in the churchyard cemetery on "Allée Robert Benoist" that fellow pioneer race driver, (additional info and facts about Ferenc Szisz) Ferenc Szisz is buried.

This is the only person inscribed on the memorial without a first name it may suggest that they did not have a close or lengthy connection with the village.

While researching my family tree this year I discovered that my father's name is carved on a plaque on the Brookwood Memorial in Brookwood Military Semetery in Surrey.
It was a still, autumn day as we approached the Memorial which is surrounded by trees with shades of red, copper and gold - It was so peaceful.
The beautiful circular Memorial, built of Portland Stone has fourteen pillars with green slate panels on either side, all inscribed with the names of men in the land forces who were killed in the second World War but have no known graves.

In the morning on 12th July I went from Portsmouth to Guildford where I met Carol Jowet who was so kind and took me to the Brookwood Military Cemetery by her car.
From the Brookwood Military Cemetery we moved to the north - in the direction of London - to Runnymede Memorial which lies not so far from the Windsor Castle.
As you can find in the section Runnymede Memorial, there are commemorate all RAF airmen and airwomen who lost their lives during WWII and have not-known grave.
