Brother André (French:Frère André, born Alfred Bessette) (9 August 1845 January 6, 1937) was a Canadian religious figure, credited with thousands of supposed miraculous healings.
André Provençal, noticed the devotion and generosity of the young man. He decided to present Alfred to the Congregation of Holy Cross in Montreal.
Because he wanted Saint Joseph to be honoured, in 1904, Brother André began the construction of a small chapel on the side of Mount Royal, facing the College.

André had worked at a number of unskilled jobs in Canada and the United States before he entered Holy Cross, so as a humble lay brother, he joyfully washed floors and windows, cleaned lamps, carried firewood, and worked as a porter and messenger--all without a single complaint.
Brother André was one of the first to count on St. Joseph as a realtor and appealed to him about property many times.
Brother André died peacefully in a Montreal hospital in January of 1937.
