  Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
The Brotherhood of the Wolf is a sweeping historical epic with generous helpings of action, romance and horror.
The Wolf itself is a curious animal and despite the efforts of Jim Henson's Creature shop the CGI realised creature is less effective when seen that when it is simply heard.
Brotherhood of the Wolf goes on general release in the United Kingdom next month and follows soon in the United States.

Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte Des Loups, 2001)
Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte Des Loups) is a literal melting pot of cultures and genres.
However, all is not loss with Brotherhood of the Wolf, as the fight sequences are some of the better choreographed I’ve seen in some time.
Included in the vast Brotherhood environment, we can be anywhere from dark, lush forests to candlelit rooms in mystifying castles and this dual nature of the palette worked quite nice for the film and was very pleasing to the eye.

As a whole, “Brotherhood of the Wolf” is a stylistic success, that works much like the offerings seen in most summer Hollywood fare.
"Brotherhood of the Wolf" is presented in a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer.
Though a sizeable hit in its native France, "Brotherhood of the Wolf" failed to make much of an impact in the U.S., particularly when compared with the superior French import "Amelie." Though much of the film is over-the-top (crazy action, on-the-verge-of-confusing plot), director Gans' style is quite effective.

Brotherhood of the Wolf tells the story of a mysterious beast that terrorizes the Gevaudan province of 18th century France.
The creature, described by the few surviving witnesses as an enormous wolf, brutally kills women and children, mostly of the peasant variety, in the picturesque settings of the French countryside.
Be warned: there are scenes in Brotherhood of the Wolf that are not for the faint of heart.

With "Brotherhood" you're getting the costumes and sets you'd expect from a Merchant-Ivory film, the sweeping shots of people riding horseback over beautiful landscapes that you'd expect from a dramatic epic, the choreographed martial arts action of John Woo, and the brutal, schlocky horror of a movie like "It's Alive".
"Brotherhood of The Wolf" is a great film because it constantly goes in unexpected directions, always choosing depth of character over the safety net of hurrying to the next action scene.
;"Brotherhood of the Wolf" captures you and holds on from the first moment to the last.

In the end, it was concluded that the beast must be some kind of wolf as it was the only animal imaginable that could explain the state of disembowelment found in the remains of each victim.
Brotherhood of the Wolf starts from this historical jumping off point and then runs with it to the extreme corners of genre instability.

Brotherhood of the Wolf is gourmet Brie on a baguette — empty calories, and certainly a guilty pleasure, but what a delicious diversion.
However, Universal, Brotherhood of the Wolf's American distributor, wasn't impressed by the film's $11 million gross Stateside, which was indubitably less than they spent promoting the picture and dubbing it into English.
The good news is the disc's image is a spotless 2:35:1 widescreen image which showcases Brotherhood of the Wolf's sumptuous scenery, ample eye candy, and, in the case of Belucci and Dacasos, attractive leads.

Cleverly, the plot is inspired by a series of actual wolf attacks in the 1760s which so shook the populace that Louis XV ordered the animal hunted down.
When "Brotherhood of the Wolf" sticks with the "Wolf" part of the plot, its powers of imagination, fantasy and tension are very engaging.
It's when the "Brotherhood" bit comes into play that its brought down to the usual level of the genre with stylish excess trying to make up for deficiencies in the plot and the performances.

France's Amelie is currently doing brisk business, and studios certainly hope that Brotherhood of the Wolf, a movie entirely different in tone, does the same.
Brotherhood takes place over the span of a couple years, so Fronsac has the time to woo Marianne de Morangias (Emilie Dequenne, Rosetta) and spend time with courtesan/seer Sylvia (Monica Bellucci, Malena, Under Suspicion).
Nonetheless, Brotherhood of the Wolf is still an enjoyable escapist movie that feels like watching different types of movies at the same time.

An unnaturally large wolf was believed responsible for nearly 100 savage, fatal attacks on local villagers, and after a number of unsuccessful hunting excursions by King Louis XV's best men over a three year period, the so-called Beast of Gévaudan became the stuff of myth and legend.
The screenplay for Brotherhood of the Wolf, by Stéphane Cabel and Gans, borrows liberally from historical fact, mixing actual and fictional characters into a reworking of the events, and the result is a speculative premise, based in part on fact, that is revealed ever so slowly during the film's nearly 2-1/2 hour length.
It's extremely hard to pigeonhole Brotherhood of the Wolf into a certain category, other than to state when all is said and done it is probably unlike anything you have seen in quite some time.

Brotherhood Of The Wolf is beautifully shot and its feeling of authenticity from the castles of noblemen to the shacks of peasants justifies its, for a French film, large budget.
Inside Brotherhood Of The Wolf there is undoubtedly a fine film struggling to get out, and it is on the whole a more confusing movie than a boring one.
As it stands, however, Brotherhood Of The Wolf is the cinematic equivalent of a concussion - it keeps hitting you over the head until you can't remember a thing about it.

Story-wise, Brotherhood of the Wolf comes off like one of Wong Jing's better movies -- there is literally everything in here, from action to horror to drama to romance (with even a bit of exploitation thrown in), but the movie manages to stay cohesive, because one element is never emphasized too much.

Fronsac confirms the size of the beast by examining bite marks in the corpse of a victim, and is left scratching his head over the fact that neither its size nor its pattern of aggressive behavior are consistent with those of a wolf.

BBC - Films - review - Brotherhood of the Wolf
French cinema is a strange beast that is torn between the rarefied aesthetics of its arthouse fare and the commercial imperatives of the mainstream.
"Brotherhood of the Wolf " (Le Pacte des Loups) is a rather unsatisfying attempt to combine the two: a "Jaws" -style monster yarn that also offers a social critique of France's pre-Revolution elite.
Assisted by Mani (Mark Decascos), an Iroquoi Indian he met in the New World, Fronsac realises the beast is in fact a wolf that has been trained to kill.

Brotherhood of the Wolf - Review
Born of a 200 year old French legend and nested in the mystic of exquisitely primitive landscapes, the previews of Brotherhood of the Wolf might deceive you into perceiving it to be a martial arts film costumed for Versailles.
As compelling, are the equal beauties that emerge to tear at the strings of Fronsac's heart and soul, Marianne (Emilie Dequenne) is as delightfully innocent as Sylvia (Monica Bellucci) is sensually dangerous.
The lavish way the story is painted: with innocent beauties touched by horrifying predators; settings of red velvet brushed by leather; hillside castles drenched in sunsets or hidden behind curtains of icy snow fall, evokes an irresistibly intoxicating dance of life and death.

IGN: Brotherhood of the Wolf (Three-Disc Collector's Edition) [Canadian Exclusive] Review
When we saw Brotherhood of the Wolf on its opening night in that theater, we experienced the reason why studios are a little hesitant about doing a mass release of a subtitled film, even in the light of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
We sat towards the back of the theater, and one row behind us were five or six idiots who spent the majority of their time just saying "sup" to each other over and over.
Brotherhood of the Wolf (or Le Pact des Loups) is an interesting film that tries to mix a real legend/myth from France with martial arts and fiction.
