Brough is a small town located on the A66 to the east of the county.
From Market Brough, the scenic B6276 road leads to Alston via Middleton-in-Teasdale, County Durham, passing High Force Waterfall - reputed to be the highest unbroken fall of water in England, (21 metres).
A few miles north of Brough, on private land, within the Warcop danger area, in the Fox Tower folly.

 CastleXplorer - Brough Castle
Brough Castle was built in the 1090's in one corner of the remains of a Roman fort.
It was one of the first stone castles to be built in Britain, and some of the walls show the herringbone pattern typical of Norman masonry.
In 1174 Brough was attacked by the Scottish King, William the lion, and left in a ruinous state after he forced a surrender by setting fire to the castle.

Brough or Brough under Stainmore is a village and civil parish in the Eden district of Cumbria, England, on the western fringe of the Pennines.
Brough is situated five miles (8 km) north-east of Kirkby Stephen and twenty-eight miles (45 km) north-east of Kendal on the A685.
Brough Castle was originally built in the 11th century within the northern part of the former fort.

He started the demolition of the castle, taking stone to repair the castle at Appleby, and soon after this the roofs and fittings were sold off and the stone used to repair local buildings.

The oldest parts of Brough Castle date from about 1100, when what is now North West England had just been annexed by William Rufus from the Scottish Kingdom.
In 1203 King John gave Brough, along with Appleby and the Lordship of Westmorland, to Robert de Vieupoint, the builder of Brougham.
In 1521 fire destroyed much of the castle, and it was not occupied again until Lady Anne Clifford inherited it in 1643, when she undertook restoration work on all the castles she inherited.

Brough Castle is in a remote position along the A66 that crosses the country linking Cumbria with the north east.
The village of Brough is small and there is no car park for visitors to the castle which is reached through a cow field - mind your footing!

A disproportionate number of military lead seals have also been recovered from Brough Castle, suggesting that the fort functioned as some sort of administrative centre, but no more details are currently available.
A large number of coins have been found over the years at Brough, and records span from 1865 to 1962, but many are unrecorded or unprovenanced.
The only evidence we have which names a Roman garrison unit stationed at Brough Castle is the entry in the Notitia Dignitatum and gives us the name of the fourth/fifth century garrison regiment, the Numerus Directorum, which appears among the list of units assigned to the 'Duke of the Britains'.

Brough Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Brough, Cumbria, England.
Brough Castle first came under serious attack in 1174, during a raid on England by the Scottish king William the Lion, in support of the Revolt of 1173-1174.
An engraving of 1739 by the Buck Brothers shows Brough Castle still standing, but by the time it came under the protection of the Ministry of Works in 1920, it was only just saved from total collapse.

Climbing up to the Standards could have been the stimulus that provoked the ball to grow into a cone and become one of the most repeated and most travelled forms in my work.
I know that I made my first cone at Brough and that one of the Standards is distinctly cone-shaped.

Brough Castle is built on the site of a Roman Fort (Verterae, the outlines of which are still just visible), to the south of the town of Brough, and approached through the village of Church Brough, the Castle is undergoing some consolidation work under the care of English Heritage.
Built around 1090 by King William II the Castle has a chequered and bloody history.
There is still enough to see to make it worthwhile taking a close look and the Castle makes a striking sight when seen from the A66 road.
