Henry Brougham, the son of Henry and Eleanora Brougham, landowners in Westmorland, was born in Edinburgh on 19th September, 1778.
In 1807 Brougham was given the task of organising the Whigs press campaign in the 1807 General Election.
Brougham was defeated by the Tory George Canning and was without a seat in the House of Commons for the next four years.

Royal Brougham was born in St. Louis on September 17, 1894, and arrived in Seattle with his family as a youngster.  He vividly remembered his youth in Seattle, particularly on Queen Anne Hill, which -- in his opinion -- was a “mini-mountain.”
Brougham attended Franklin High School but, in 1910, dropped out to be a copy boy in the sports department of the Post-Intelligencer.
Perhaps Brougham’s most famous assignment, however, was the one that no one in Seattle was able to read about.  In 1936, he accompanied the University of Washington rowing crew to the Berlin Olympics.
