A shrike is a passerine bird of the family Laniidae which is known for its habit of catching other birds and small animals and impaling the uneaten portions of their bodies on thorns, so that it can tear them into smaller, more conveniently-sized fragments.
A typical shrike's beak is hooked, like a bird of prey, reflecting its predatory nature.
Shrikes are also known as "butcher birds" because of their habit of keeping a "larder" of corpses.

Clearly visible is the eye patch which extends from the base of the bill across the ear coverts; the broad and white supercilium; the russet flush to the breast and belly; and the relatively dense russet-brown of the mantle (in comparison to the crown).
These are all characters that help to distinguish the Brown Shrike from the Isabelline.They incline one to believe that subspecific identity of the bird was Lanius cristatus cristatus.
This is the southernmost of the four subspecies of Brown Shrike (breeding in Korea and the southern half of China) and would therefore be the least likely to be expected in North America.

The pale, rusty, brown bird with long fl/brown tail feathers was first sighted on November 23rd at the Fairview Container Pier and has since taken up residence in a backyard at 17 Evans Street in Halifax, near the Bedford Highway.
The brown shrike is a songbird, native to Asia.
He suggests the chances of a shrike appearing in the province is about "a trillion to one." The Halifax sighting is the only recorded sighting of the bird, east of the Rookies.

On 26 November 1997, I was fortunate to be among about a couple of dozen birders who saw the Brown Shrike that Roger Foxall had discovered in Halifax, N.S., on 23 November.
Ian McLaren, having consulted much relevant literature, is of the opinion that this bird is a Brown Shrike Lanius cristatus of the race cristatus from northeastern Asia.
I had the impression of a pale buff margin at the tip of at least a couple of feathers but that was hard to judge because the tail was so often in motion.

I have this photo of a Brown Shrike taken from inside the house which I like very much.
Back at the computer, I carefully cloned in the green background and also cloned in the brown bit of feathers onto the bird - filling in the blanks as it were to remove the blurred branches.
I also have to copy the left leg from another brown shrike picture as I do not have anything to clone from.

In the restaurant garden we saw several Black-Throated Sunbirds in a tree.
In the afternoon we saw a Yellow-cheeked Tit, Gould's Sunbird, Mountain Tailorbird, Black-headed Sibia, Golden-throated Barbet, Short-billed Minivet, Wedge-tailed Pigeon, Flavescent Bulbul, Brown-throated Treecreeper, Chestnut-fronted Shrike-babbler, Blue-winged Minia, Mountain Bulbul, Ashy Drongo, Chestnut-vented Nuthatch, Inornate Warbler, Bronzed Drongo, Hill Prinia, Olive-backed Pipit, Grey-backed Shrike, Slaty-backed Flycatcher, and a Blue Whistling-thrush.
I am not so clever, because I wrote down so many birds without noting which birds were rare.
