Topic: Brown backed Whistler

  handprint : james mcneill whistler
Whistler's mother took the children to live in London in 1847, then returned to the USA after her husband's death from cholera in 1849.
In the early 1860's Whistler met D.G. Rossetti and Albert Moore (1841-1893); with Moore he developed the tenets of "Art for Art's sake," titling his works after musical compositions to affirm that they should be seen for their abstract qualities, free of the literary or moral ideals of the Pre-Raphaelites.
Whistler spent his last years destroying many early paintings and drawings from his Paris studio and working on a full length self portrait, Brown and Gold, which was displayed at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1900 but continually revised up to Whistler's death in London in 1903, at age 69.

University of Glasgow :: Centre for Whistler Studies :: Biographical Notes
Whistler was established at the forefront of the etching revival.
Whistler, wishing he had been a pupil of Ingres, began a series of paintings of classically draped women and flowers on a musical theme, known as the 'Six Projects' (Freer Gallery of Art) for the 'Liverpool Medici', the shipowner, F. Leyland.
Whistler etched but never published several later sets, including a 'Jubilee Set' in 1887, a 'Renaissance set' in France in 1888, and Amsterdam in 1889, 'of far finer quality than all that has gone before – combining a minuteness of detail...

Pachycephalidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The family Pachycephalidae includes the whistlers, shrike-thrushes, shrike-tits, pitohuis and Crested Bellbird, and is part of the Australo-Papuan corvid lineage.
Its members range from small to medium in size, and occupy most of Australasia: Australia in particular, but also New Guinea, New Zealand, and in the case of the whistlers, the South Pacific islands and parts of Indonesia.
Several species belonging to this family are outstanding songsters: the whistlers produce an astonishing volume for their size, and the lyrebirds aside, the Grey Shrike-thrush is often regarded as the finest, most inventive songbird of them all.

The heathland around the back of the lake was a little slower but we did have Brush Bronzewing, and Tasmanian Thornbills were rather easy there.

Whistlers have long been associated with jazz dating back to “Big Noise from Winnetka” by the Bob Crosby band, the work of Toots Thielemans, and the puccolo of Ron McCroby.
Joel Brandon, flautist, composer, vocalist, and master whistler has provided an incredible musical journey that also includes the talents of Willie Pickens, piano; Harrison Bankhead, bass; Kirk Brown, piano; Keith Henderson, Guitar; Morris Jennings, drums; Famoudou Don Moye, percussion, and on three of the eight cuts, Billy Higgins on drums.
Brandon’s autobiographical “The Whistler’s Rhyme” is a fun, interesting, and somewhat campy self-description of Brandon’s talents for rhyme and whistling.

Further up, Brown Sicklebills intimidated us with their loud machine-gun calls and, in the highest forests, we were lucky to see a male Crested Bird of Paradise, and also Ribbon-tailed Astrapias — birds with proportionally the longest tail streamers in the world!
