Browncoat is a term from the science fiction Western TV series Firefly (and its big-screen "sequel", Serenity).
In the Firefly universe, Browncoats were soldiers who fought for the Independents, who lost to the Alliance in the Unification War.

The group was nicknamed Browncoats, due to the brown colored trench coats they wore.

A group of Browncoats are using Shawna Trpcic's costume auction as a means of buying their Captain a birthday gift.
After being informed (by Shawna and Nathan's brother) that Nathan Fillion does not have a Browncoat of his own, from the series or the movie, a group of Browncoats have gotten together to raise a fund in order to win the coat from Shawna's auction.
But, unless she has been very very canny in setting the reserve at a high enough level, it could be that what happens is that this venture puts other bidders off (who feel that they may be spoiling Nathan’s party) and the coat goes for less than it otherwise would.

 Serenity Happens
Most of the Browncoats were familiar with and enjoyed Whedon's other works but not all found Firefly from it's beginning on Fox.
The term shindig is taken from the name of one of the Firefly episodes, called "Shindig" which revolves around a large formal ball in the town and the bit of swordplay that ensues afterwards.
Even our US Navy has benefited from Browncoat generosity as donations were collected on the various fan sites to buy sets for the troops overseas.

People are much more likely to respond directly to the site when they see something they don't like; when they see something they do like, they go to their own blogs and say "hey, look at this, ain't it grand?" like Ammy and others have done.
October 08 2005 at 02:25 PM I'm actually not sure what a Browncoat it, though just from reading this blog and posted comments, it would appear that similarities to "Brown Shirt" may not be easily dimissed.

I was a little late in climbing aboard Serenity, only discovering the show earlier this year, but I completely understand the near-religious zeal with which Kallen speaks of the show.
And if I hadn't known an enthusiastic Browncoat like her, I probably never would have met Mal Reynolds and his merry band of space adventurers.

After months of hard work & liaising with UIP the weekend finally came around and was a huge success.
We showed the trailers continuously and gave away thousands of fliers.

I too have been told by the people at pocket books that they do not accept manuscripts openly and was told by krad (aka Kieth RC) are even choosy about published authors they let touch the Firefle/Serenity material.
Thats one of the best things about browncoats, Star, they just kick ass! I felt the same as you did many months ago and went about finding out the same things!
But, if you really want fans to read your work, I have come to realize, you must post it! There is no copyright available for something we do not own, as you can imagine, so our stories involving the crew of Serenity are great fodder for other fans, but nothing more in a professional way.
