  Divisional Machine Guns
Machine gun companies that were attached to infantry battalions designated as division or brigade reserve for a particular mission were usually placed under direct command of their respective brigade commanders, to fill gaps of fire and to protect the brigade flanks.
When they employed their guns in that fashion, the machine gun officers often ran into opposition from the rifle company commanders, who preferred to have the guns farther forward, fearing that their infantrymen would be at risk of stray low rounds as they advanced under the overhead machine gun fire.
Machine gun tactical doctrine dictated that in the defense the Hotchkiss guns should only rarely be located within 100 yards of the front line and that at least two-thirds of the guns should be echeloned back through the whole defensive position, located so that adjacent guns would be mutually supporting.

 Browning Automatic Rifle at AllExperts
The Browning Automatic Rifle (commonly known as the BAR; properly pronounced "bee ay are") is a family of automatic rifles (or machine rifles) and light machine guns used by the United States and other countries during the 20th century.
It was designed in 1917 by the weapons designer John Browning, primarily as a replacement for, and improvement on, the French-made Chauchat and Hotchkiss M1909.
The original version was and remains the lightest service machine gun to fire the.30-06 Springfield cartridge, but its 20-round magazine tended to hamper its use as a light machine gun.

The Gatling machine gun (patented in 1862 by Richard Jordan Gatling), was the dominant automatic weapon of the era; it was a rapid-fire gun powered by a hand-operated crank.
Browning was also able to employ the same principle for a semi-automatic pistol that became the standard military sidearm for the United States in 1911.

 THE FRENCH CONNECTION II
A total of only 1,168 Model 1917 Browning machine guns were delivered to Europe before hostilities ceased in November 1918, and the first recorded use of the BMG in combat did not occur until September 26, 1918, toward the end of the war.
The Hotchkiss remained the primary medium-heavy machine gun used by the A.E.F throughout the summer of 1918 when most of the decisive battles of WWI were fought, and only replaced by the late arrival Browning in the fall of 1918.
With 130+ pounds of gun and mount, plus all the ammo that is required to feed a machine gun of this capacity, it would have been necessary for soldiers to devise such a method to easily move the gun from one position to another without disassembly.

 Colt Machine Gun
Rejected by the U.S. Army, which continued its successful use of the venerable.45 caliber rotating multi-barrel Gatling gun, several hundred Colt machine guns were purchased by the United States Navy in the same 6mm Lee caliber as its new Winchester-Lee Model 1895 straight pull action rifle.
Roosevelt indicated that he would have preferred the guns mounted on carriages but even this type of transport would have proven difficult for use in the jungle terrain in the type of offensive operations carried out in that campaign.
However, the Colt did usher in the age of the machine gun in United States service (although the US Army never formally adopted the Colt it recognized the value of the machine gun) and pointed to a century in which the machine gun would quickly become a dominant arm in warfare.

The Colt Model 1911 was slightly improved in early 1920's when the flat mainspring housing was replaced with an arched one (not a wise selection according to my personal opinion), a shorter hammer spur was used, a short trigger was made standard as well as a longer grip safety.
This new gun featured a 4.25" barrel, (compared to the 5" of its prodecessor) and had an aluminum frame (for the first time this material was used in a handgun frame).
In the 1980's Colt introduced a new series of all their models, with an additional safety device, namely a firing pin safety, which didn't allow the pistol to fire if the trigger wasn't pulled to the end of its travel.
