Topic: Brownist

  Smyth, John (ca. 1565-1612)
About this time or shortly before he was won to the principles of the Puritan Brownists, whom he had previously attacked in a polemical tract.
Early in 1603 he was invited by a number of Puritan manufacturers of Gainsborough to be their preacher, and for nearly four years he served as the leader of the Gainsborough Brownist congregation.
But the oppression of the Nonconformists was becoming more and more severe during the reign of King James I; Smyth left England, and with a number of adherents went to Amsterdam in October or November 1607.

For, saith he, it is not possible the Christian world should come so lately out of such thick antichristian darkness, and that full perfection of knowledge should break forth at once.
’Another thing he commended to us, was that we should use all means to avoid and shake off the name of Brownist, being a mere nickname and brand to make religion odious and the professors of it to the Christian world.
And to that end, said he, I should be glad if some godly minister would go over with you before my coming; for, said he, there will be no difference between the uncomformable ministers and you, when they come to the practices of the ordinances out of the kingdom.

"I had as lief be a Brownist as a politician," said bibulous Sir Andrew Ague-cheek.
Since the time when a little band of Brownists sailed away to Massachusetts Bay, the sect has come into better repute, but "politician" is still used as a term of disparagement.
And curiously enough, it is never so frequently used in this way as among the descendants of those Brownists who in the cabin of the Mayflower organized themselves into a "body politic."
