In 1940, Des Fothergill and Herb Matthews tied for the medal and could not be separated on countback, so neither player received the real medal.
Nowadays it is possible for multiple medals to be awarded in the event of a tie, and in 1988, players who had tied on votes but lost on countback were given retrospective medals.

He was recently named captain of the Swans team of the century, but despite his Brownlow success he did not play in a premiership-winning side and played in only one final, when the Swans were hammered by 53 points by St Kilda in 1970.
"The Brownlow is not what you play footy for, you play to win and hopefully to be in a successful team and to play in a premiership side, but sometimes things don't work out that way," he said.

Certainly deserves a medal but may have to wait another year.

This should be the case until the AFL makes a final decision on whether they will scrap the fairest tag of the medal and allow the best player to win, disregarding any indiscretions.
The critics may say a player should be recognised for his performances through Brownlow voting, but even if they are excluded from Brownlow voting they will still get the recognition they deserve for a great year through different avenues.
It's time for the AFL to act, if not this season surely for the next, to ensure the Medal, and star players aren't tarnished because a simple rule was not implemented.

An award such as the Brownlow is not the ultimate measure of a player like Nathan Buckley's career.
Also, the fact that the award rewards only the best and fairest players in 22 games shows that consistency over those rounds are rewarded, unlike the 227 games which he has played, a handful of which would have been regarded as "average" on the mere mortal scale.That is where we salute Nathan Buckley.
