  Bruce Fraser, 1st Baron Fraser of North Cape - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Admiral of the Fleet Bruce Fraser, 1st Baron Fraser of North Cape, GCB, KBE, (February 5, 1888–February 12, 1981) was a senior British admiral during World War II.
He was Commander-in-Chief of the Home Fleet during the later stages of the naval war in Europe, and during that period he commanded the Royal Navy force that destroyed the Scharnhorst at the Battle of North Cape in December 1943.
Fraser was the British signer of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on 2 September 1945.

The Bruce´s claim to the throne of Scotland were based on a marriage of Robert, 4th Lord of Annandale with a niece of king William the Lion.
When Robert the Bruce secured the throne to Scotland he generally rewarded his friends at the expense of his enemies, and the family of Comyn (Cumming) was among those who lost land and titles.
The name of Fraser, said to be of Norman origin, is first found in the south of Scotland in the 12th ct. The first recorded Fraser in the Highlands was possibly Sir Andrew Fraser who acquired the lands of Lovat through his wife, the daughter of the Earl of Orkney and Caithness.

In 1943 she was temporarily detached to duties in the Mediterranean, and was involved in the invasion of Sicily and attack on Taranto. In 1944 she was redeployed to the new British Pacific Fleet as the flagship of the fleet's second-in-command, Rear Admiral Sir Bernard Rawlings.
Although both she and her sister ship HMS Howe had a much reduced role compared with the North Atlantic campaign, often providing anti-aircraft cover for the fleet's aircraft carriers, they were both involved in the bombardments of Okinawa and southern Honshu, where the King George V last fired her main armament in anger.
Following the end of World War Two, the battleships of the King George V Class had become obsolete and expensive to run. Refitted in 1946/47, she was reduced to a training role in Portland.
