Selected by NASA as one of 19 new astronauts in April 1966, McCandless was appointed a member of the astronaut support crew for the Apollo 14 mission and backup pilot for Skylab 2.
McCandless was a mission specialist on the tenth Shuttle flight (STS 41-B), on Feb. 3, 1984, during which the MMU and the Manipulator Foot Restraint were tested in space for the first time.
McCandless made free flights on each of the two MMUs carried on board and took part in other activities during two spectacular EVAs.

Bruce McCandless II During the first of his two Space Shuttle flights, in 1984, Bruce McCandless II became the first human satellite, the first person to fly free in space, without a lifeline attached to his mother ship.
NASA selected McCandless for astronaut training in 1966, and after serving in several mission support positions, he was assigned to fly on the shuttle Challenger, which lifted off on an eight-day trip on February 3, 1984.
McCandless returned to space aboard Discovery in 1990, with a five-person crew that deployed the Hubble Space Telescope, which opened a striking new window on the universe for astronomers around the world.
