EXPERIENCE: Upon graduation from the Coast Guard Academy, Melnick was assigned as a deck watch officer aboard the USCG Cutter STEADFAST, homeported in St. Petersburg, Florida.
During 141 orbits of the Earth, the STS-49 crew rendezvoused with, captured, attached a new rocket motor to, and deployed the Intelsat VI communications satellite, and conducted the Assembly of Station by EVA methods (ASEM) evaluation.
Melnick performed the duties of flight Engineer (MS-2) and was the principal Remote Manipulator System (RMS) operator throughout the mission.

Once the satellite were stabilized, Melnick would grapple the INTELSAT with Endeavour's mechanical arm and pull it to a position vertical with the shuttle's cargo bay.

Bruce Melnick advised the way Boeing gives is part of its culture; it goes a long way back; one of its founding fathers, John McDonald, always talked about being a member of the community is not a spectator sport; and the members of the Boeing Company live and breathe that culture.
Melnick stated giving to organizations is a chance for him to give back; Boeing looks at it as if one is fortunate enough to work for the Boeing Company, there are always people less fortunate; and they need to give back to their communities.
