 VH1.com : Movies : Person : Johann Strauss II : Biography
The younger Strauss couldn't resist the calling, however, and quickly overshadowed his father as a composer of waltzes, polkas, and marches, and as orchestra leader.
Although Strauss -- a man as naïve in the world of politics as he was adept in the composition of music -- had sided with the rebels, which caused the court of the Emperor Franz Josef to keep him at arm's length for decades, he was able to make his career in the imperial capital.
Strauss' contribution to operetta was somewhat more uneven than his work in orchestral music, principally because of his inexperience in theatrical matters -- he simply could not, intuitively or intellectually, distinguish a good libretto from a bad libretto.

Strauss, who was born in Omaha and attended a small college in Nebraska on a wrestling scholarship, became a fighter in an unusual, and totally unplanned, way.
Strauss began his career as a lightweight, but he fought in every division up to, and including, heavyweight during his career.
Although Strauss was a perfect example of why Congress passed a law that regulated boxing to eliminate the hazards to "Opponents", some boxing enthusiasts recall Strauss with warmth and appreciation for the zest and willingness he brought to his chosen profession.

Bruce Balick reported that Connie Rockosi polled the UWash users, and found that they would "very, very much" like to use an IFS at APO, especially for spectroscopy of extended galaxies, halos, etc. They note that the instrument would likely need bigger lenslets to reach the sky limit, probably ~3 arcsec.
Bruce Balick reminded us that we need to be careful to define the unique niche this instrument would fill on a 3.5-m telescope, given the competition.
Bruce Gillespie noted the similarities in IFS to the proposed WIYN 1-degree camera, where the expected instrument costs are comparable to the initial costs of their respective telescopes, and both filling a niche that only 4-m class telescopes can serve.

The IRS said the new estimate of $312 billion to $353 billion is preliminary and will be refined into a final, more detailed estimate by the end of this year.
Strauss thinks the IRS is underestimating the amount of people who don't file returns, and that could make the tax gap even higher than $353 billion.
Strauss, who lives in Jacksonville, has been pressing government officials and lawmakers for the last two years to address the tax gap.

Strauss, at the Globe and Mail, says he got no response when he repeatedly called David to ask him about this.

 Friedrich Nietzsche
The four studies were: David Strauss, the Confessor and the Writer (David Strauss, der Bekenner und der Schriftsteller, 1873); On the Uses and Disadvantages of History for Life (Vom Nutzen und Nachteil der Historie für das Leben, 1874); Schopenhauer as Educator (Schopenhauer als Erzieher, 1874); Richard Wagner in Bayreuth (1876).
Responding to Strauss's advocacy of a "new faith" grounded upon a scientifically-determined universal mechanism -- one, however, lubricated by the optimistic, "soothing oil" of historical progress -- Nietzsche unmercifully attacked Strauss's view as a vulgar and dismal sign of cultural degeneracy.
In The Case of Wagner, Nietzsche "declares war" upon Richard Wagner, whose music is characterized as both the epitome of modern cultural achievement and as thoroughly sick and decadent.
