Brucite is usually found as platy masses, sometimes of considerable size, which have a perfect cleavage parallel to the surface of the plates.
It is white, sometimes with a tinge of grey, blue or green, varies from transparent to translucent, and on the cleavage surfaces has a pronounced pearly lustre.
Brucite is generally associated with other magnesian minerals, such as magnesite and dolomite, and is commonly found in serpentine, or sometimes as small scales in phyllites and crystalline schists; it has also been observed in metamorphosed magnesian limestone, such as the rock known as predazzite from Predazzo in Tirol.

Mr Nothdurft said what made the presence of brucite in coral skeletons remarkable was that the mineral should dissolve in sea water, not form.
However, brucite was able to form in isolated micro-environments about the width of a human hair due to the presence of algae, bacteria and fungi which helped it to grow.

Brucite, Mg(OH)2 is a simple crystalline hydroxide, and is an end-member for hydrous minerals that hosts H2O in the crust and mantle of the Earth.
We determine the theoretical equation of state for brucite with Ko of 53 GPa and its pressure derivative, Ko' of 6.2, using LDA, and a Ko value of 34 GPa and Ko' of 5.8 with GGA (both, corrected for zero pressure and thermal pressures at T= 300 K).
We are also exploring the elastic constants (cij) for brucite and their pressure dependence.
