Bruford's stuff has Actual melodies -- hummable, even -- and is probably the only fusion album I've heard that will leave its songs stuck in your head.
Bruford's compositional skills are also assured -- you never get the impression, as you might with many jazz-rock pieces, that a passage is included just to show instrumental virtuosity.
Bruford is such a generous musician, this record is not built around his drumming for the sake of him showing off, it is a collective effort.

He has been in many bands and collaborated in several projects, the most famous of which have been Yes, King Crimson and his own fusion band Bruford.
While Bruford has gone on to form his own jazz band, Earthworks, he continues to colaborate with many musicians, including one-time Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz and bassist Tony Levin.

Bruford came to prominence in the late '60s with Yes.
On its 1987 Earthworks debut album, Bruford often used electric Simmons drums to contrast acoustic horn players Iain Ballamy and Django Bates and upright bassist Mick Hutton, achieving the opposite of the standard lineup where drums are the only acoustic instrument.
Bruford continued recording and touring with King Crimson through 1997, releasing the Earthworks compilation Heavenly Bodies just as he quit the venerable rock band with which he'd had his longest tenure.

Following an interim two year/two album stint improvising on acoustic piano and drums with Patrick Moraz, Bruford formed his electro-acoustic jazz group Earthworks in 1986, with Django Bates and Iain Ballamy, specifically to continue this work on melody from the drum set, but now in a jazz context.

Bruford's Yes departure is "dumb" in your estimation, years and miles away, and perhaps it wasn't the wisest move in a business sense.
Bill Bruford and his band are extremely friendly and always take the time to have a chat after the show and sign albums - much of these are available on sale at affordable prices at the gig (unlike the rip-off Yes merchandise).
Bill Bruford IS in a group with musicians of the same stature as himself and, what's more, Earthworks is not (and never intended to be) a stadium band.
