  Brugge
Brugge, located in western Belgium, is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities.
From the 11th century onward, Brugge was an international commercial center thanks to its direct access to the sea.
It was carved in Carrara marble in 1504-5.

 Exploring Brugge, Belgium
Not true of my May 2000 visit of lovely Brugge, dubbed the "Venice of the North." Brugge is located in Belgium's Dutch-like Flanders, with old city walls, spires, gates, and network of canals lined with snarly old trees – but made Holland-like with its age-old wooden windmills.
Alas, Brugge is far and away -- and now, very far away -- so much dreamier, lovelier, romantic, quiet and cozy than my Schenectady, where the incessant sound of sirens and traffic has competed, in certain places and times, with old buildings being ripped down rather than celebrated.
Even in May, Belgium was surprisingly chilly, frequently turning cloudy then sunny, only to be once again visited by the blustery northern breeze bringing in another fresh batch of moistened clouds.
