Bruinen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bruinen began with two tributaries in the Misty Mountains, one of them was began at the High Pass where Goblin-town was later dug.
The river formed the southern border of the Kingdom of Arnor and later the petty-realm of Rhudaur, south of it lay Eregion or Hollin.
At the beginning of the War of the Ring Frodo Baggins was raced on Glorfindel's horse towards the Ford of Bruinen, with the Ringwraiths in hot pursuit.

Bruinen or Loudwater had its spring or springs, since there were two, in Hithaeglir south of the Coldfells.
Both the springs ran 50 - 60 miles west into the past realm of Rhudaur where they met and turned their course into a south-western direction for about 160 miles till the junction with Hoarwell coming from the north and the river changed name to Mitheithel.
South-east of Bruinen was the land Eregion and in the west between Hoarwell and Bruinen the area called the Angle where the Great East Road was the boundry from the Last Bridge to Imladris.

The river is not mentioned by name in Lord of the Rings, not as Bruinen nor anything else but in the Atlas of ME. by Karen W.Fonstadt it is called Bruinen even there is no evidence anywhere for naming it so.
But what is mentioned in the Lord of the Ring is that there were a bridge across the river leading by a winding steep path to the Fords of Bruinen.

 RIVENDELL The Vale of Rivendell
Rivendell or Imladris in the Sindarin Elven-tongue is an Elven refuge hidden in a deep valley, formed by the current of the river Bruinen, known in the common tongue as the Loudwater, in the western foothills of the Misty Mountains.
The nearby forests are rich with wildfowl, wild boar and elk for the hunting, and some late summer days a fair Elven-host can be seen riding to the hunt.
The kitchen gardens and salmon-rich waters of the Bruinen provide much of the seasonal provender favoured by the residents.

A side effect (but usually the first effect noticed) of the Ring was that it made the wearer invisible to physical beings like living Men but highly visible to spiritual beings like Ringwraith, dimmed the wearer's sight, and sharpened his hearing.
This "shadow world" was the world the Wraiths were forced to live in always, but it was also a world in which the Calaquendi (Elves of Light) held great power: therefore Glorfindel was able to stay the Witch-king at the Battle of Fornost and later again at the ford of Bruinen at Rivendell.
The enigmatic Tom Bombadil was unaffected by the Ring, or rather, the Ring had no effect on him.

 Good Night, Good Rhudaur
And there were probably several reasons for the change, reflected in different periods and events in Rhudaurian history.
The region claimed by the Kings of Rhudaur in the middle Third Age extended eastward from the Weather Hills to the Misty Mountains, and south from the Mitheithel (Hoarwell) where it flowed past the Ettenmoors to the tip of the Angle, the land between the Mitheithel and Bruinen (Loudwater) rivers.
The rivers joined together above Eregion and became the Gwathlo (Greyflood), the chief cities of which were Tharbad and Lond Daer Ened (formerly Vinyalonde).
