For Delbonnel, his concern in capturing a picture-perfect Paris was, "in terms of light and camera and lenses and beautiful locations" but that Jeunet's goal was more personal, even ambassadorial.

In only his fourth feature, cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, along with director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, managed to work magic on the City of Light, giving Paris -- a place already laden with romantic associations -- an uncommonly storybook quality on "Amelie."

In an effort to explain Delbonnel's victory, some theorized that a good number of the ASC's 170 voting members had split between Richardson and Deschanel, thus creating an opening for Delbonnel.
Delbonnel himself was not present; he was in Austin, Texas, prepping for his first day on director Doug McGrath's "Every Word Is True." In his place, his UTA agent Wayne Fitterman accepted for him -- speaking sans notes, Fitterman even remembered to thank Delbonnel's color-timer.
