Nettl summarizes the consensus on the subject by stating that ethnomusicology is "...the field which pursues knowledge of the world’s music, with emphasis on that music outside the researcher’s own culture, from a descriptive and comparative viewpoint" (11).
Nettl states that because "human memory is hardly able to retain, with equal detail, what was heard ten seconds ago along with what is being heard in the present, notation of some sort has become essential for research in music" (98).
Nettl states that the identification of genetic relationships of compositions and their variants is the greatest problem in studying geographical movement and distribution of compositions.

Blackfoot music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typically, songs which contain texts are short and not repetitive, such as: "It's a bad thing to be an old man," (Nettl, 1989, p.73, 1951 recording of a Crazy Dog Society song) or the relatively lengthy, "Yonder woman, you must take me. I am powerful.
Yonder woman, you must take me, you must hear me. Where I sit is powerful." (Nettl, 1989, p.73, Wissler and Duvall 1909:85 sung by a rock to a woman in the buffalo-rock myth).
(Nettl, 1989) The drum accompaniment to songs is rhythmically independent to the singing but in perfect unison, "slightly off the beat", and "often related roughly by the proportion of 2:3," to the vocal pulse or beat level (though see Pantaleoni, 1987).

Bruno Nettl / The Study of Ethnomusicology
Bruno Nettl selects thirty-one concepts and issues that have been the subjects of continuing debate by ethnomusicologists, and he adds four entirely new chapters and thoroughly updates the text to reflect new developments and concerns in the field.
This revised edition's four new chapters deal with the doing and writing of musical ethnography, the scholarly study of instruments, aspects of women's music and women in music, and the ethnomusicologist's study of his or her own culture.
BRUNO NETTL is professor emeritus of music and anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Also, Nettl drew attention to the concept of comparability which was developed when "early ethnomusicology was influenced by the conception of the world as one group of musics from which Western art music stood out" (Nettl 1985: 16).
Nettl makes the point that in an essay designed to survey the affect of Western music on other musics, it is a assumption that at least some distinction between the two may be made (Nettl 1985: 22).
Nettl has not made the same mistake of the early ethnomusicologist in representing specific music cultures over a long period of time with a small, selective samplings of recordings.

The book's twenty-nine chapters deal with such specific issues as the nature of music creation; the definition and conceptualization of music; the geographic distribution of musical phenomena; the stratification of music in society; and the intellectual, personal, emotional, and political problems occasioned by dealing with musicians in an intercultural context.
Nettl draws extensively upon his own field research in the Middle East, Western urban settings, and North American Indian societies, as well as upon a critical survey of the available literature, Nettl helps us better understand both the diversity and universality of the world's music.

The Blackfoot do not have well documented male Two-Spirits, but they do have "manly-hearted women" (Lewis, 1941) who act in much of the social roles of men, including willingness to sing alone, usually considered "immodest", and using a men's singing style.

Characteristics include common use of hexatonic and heptatonic scales, variety of form, melodic contour, and percussive accompaniment, melodic range averaging between an octave and a twelfth, with rhythmic complexity equal to the Plains Indians musical sub-area.
Nettl cites the Katchina dance songs as the most complex songs and the material of Hopi and Zuni musics as the most complex of the Pueblo, while the Tanoans and Keresans musics are simpler and intermediary between the Plains and western Pueblos.
The music of the Pima and Papago is intermediary between the Plains-Pueblo and the California-Yuman music areas, with melodic movement of the Yuman, though including the rise, and the form and rhythm of the Pueblo.
