Bruno Taut wollte moderne Wohnungen für die niedrigeren Gesellschaftsschichten schaffen: große Wohnflächen, lichte Räume, Wasser- und Abwasseranschluß - damals vergleichsweise modern.
Die Siedlungen Tauts der 20er und 30er Jahre waren in der damaligen Zeit wegweisend und Vorbild für viele weitere Siedlungen in Deutschland.

Die Architekten waren Bruno Taut und Martin Wagner sowie dem Gartenarchitekt Leberecht Migge.
Vom Hufeisen verlaufen strahlenförmig die Straßen mit den Reihenhäusern, bei den Bruno Taut nur vier verschiedene Grundrisse verwendete (5m und 6m Breite).
Bei einem Bummel durch die Siedlung kann man trotzdem immer wieder kleine Unterschiede zwischen den Häusern erkennen: Die Eingänge, Eckhäuser, Fenster, Loggien und Farben wurden immer wieder anders kombiniert.

Taut was born in what was then East Prussia and began his studies in architecture at age 24, with Theodor Fischer in Stuttgart, where he obtained his first commission, the renovation of a church.
Taut's dedication to art was also manifested in his drawings and paintings, many of which had little, if anything, to do with architecture or urban planning.
Midcareer, Taut designed a couple of the pavilions for industry exhibitions--his "Monument of Iron," a pavilion for the iron industry at the 1913 Leipzig building exposition, and perhaps his best-known work, the "Glasshouse," a pavilion for the glass industry at the 1914 Werkbund (German Work Federation) exhibition in Cologne.

Bruno Taut’s structure demonstrated the various ways glass could be used in a building, but also indicated how the material might be used to orchestrate human emotions and assist in the construction of a spiritual utopia.
Subsequently, Scheerbart wrote Glasarchitektur (Glass Architecture) in 1914, which he dedicated to Taut, while Taut produced his Glass Pavilion and inscribed aphorisms from Scheerbart on the lintels of the 14 side walls.
The Pavilion structure was raised up on a concrete plinth, the entrance reached by two flights of steps (one on either side of the building), which gave the pavilion a temple-like quality.
