  Rifle - LoveToKnow 1911
Gas-operated rifles, like the Hotchkiss and Colt machine guns, have fixed barrels and are worked by a portion of the powder-gases which is allowed to escape from the barrel through a small hole near the muzzle, thence entering a cylinder and working a piston in connexion with the breech mechanism.
In both rifles, on the left side of the stock, is a long-distance sight (graduated to 2800 yds.), which consists of an aperture sight near the bolt and a dial and movable pointer near the hand-guard.
Rifles of r2-bore gauge, firing a spherical ball, were subsequently made, with broad and shallow grooves making one turn in ro ft. The bullet, of the same diameter as the bore, was loaded with a thin patch that took the grooving.

 Gibbon's Artillery Manual
A rifle is a gun having in its bore a number of grooves, helical in form, which, as the projectile passes out of the bore, give it the rifled or rotating motion.
Rifled Cannon.-- The importance of applying the rifle principle to guns of large calibre, is too evident to need any explanation; and many and various have been the attempts made to succeed in it, but up to the present without any degree of certainty, although much progress has been made.
The rifled gun used with such success by the French in Italy, was, from the imperfect description we have received of it, a three -grooved rifle, and fired an oblong projectile having on the cylindrical part three pairs of soft metal buttons projecting from the surface and countersunk in the metal of the shot.

But, whereas an average Baker rifle could make it very dangerous for a "head and shoulders" 250 yards off, the smooth-bore musket was so erratic that it was of little use trying to hit a single man at distances over a hundred yards.
The Brunswick, like the Baker, fouled very considerably; and the fumbling, especially in cold weather, to get the belt of the bullet into the groove at the muzzle was a horrid drawback.
To give our infantry a rifle which, as regards hitting power, is as superior to the English "Martini-Henry" and to the Russian "Berdan" as those rifles are to the Snider seems to be a point worth securing in a match which, sooner or later, is pretty certain to be played.

Brunswick (later FM Precision and now Royal Precision) is the only shaft manufacturer that grades shafts by numerical frequency (for some shafts), instead of the usual LARSX letter grades.
In the Brunswick system, a shaft oscillation of 255 cycles per minute for a 43" driver is called a 5.5 flex, and is claimed to correspond roughly to other manufacturers' "R" flex.
Because the flex grades are derived by frequency matching, Brunswick claims that a set of their shafts is matched better than their competitors' within a matched set of shafts.

The Brunswick, a percussion gun that replaced the flintlock Baker rifle in British regular service in 1840, and subsequently in the East India Company's private army, was issued in both back action and conventional lock style.
The Brunswick rifle's most notable characteristic is, to American eyes at least, its rather odd, two grooved rifling, designed for a belted round ball.
This style of rifling and projectile was not unique to the Brunswick, and is seen in a number of sporting rifles of the period, including monster 4 bore guns favored by the likes of African hunter and explorer Sir Samuel Baker.

But repeating cavalry rifles were still too inaccurate for the infantry, which preferred a one-shot breech-loading weapon that fired accurately, approximately six shots per minute.
