The sides of the arbor were left open to the breeze, and benches and pews were moved beneath this leafy roof.
Brush arbors were temporary structures, erected only for the summer and usually for revivals and camp meetings.
Despite the lack of brush, some of these continued to be called "brush arbors," or simply "shelters." The permanent roof made the shelters a little hotter than a regular brush arbor, but they were still cooler than inside the church.

Brush Arbor Quarterly: About the Magazine
The historical Brush Arbor meetings began in the late 1700s and gained momentum throughout the 1800s, continuing on until the last of these meetings were known to be held in the mid-1900s.
Brush arbors were roughed-in shelters made of upright poles driven into the ground over which long poles were laid across the top and tied together in lattice fashion to serve as support for a primitive roof of brush or hay that served to protect the worshippers and seekers from the elements.
In the spirit of the old brush arbor meetings, this magazine is designed to be, in essence, the brush arbor meeting that comes to your mailbox.
