Brutakhi - Encyclopedia Glossary Meaning Explanation Brutakhi(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The Brutakhi were a Jewish polity of uncertain location and origin during the early 13th century.
Some translations read "ComaniBrutakhi", which seems to indicate an alignment with the Kipchaks; however, this reading has been challenged by many historians who have asserted that there should be a comma between the Comani and Brutakhi.
Some scholars have speculated that "Brutakhi" may be a corruption of "Brutas" or "Burtas", a steppe tribe of uncertain ethnic affiliation mentioned by other medieval sources.
One of them, listed among tribes of the Caucasus, Pontic steppe and the Caspian region, was the "Brutakhi, who are Jews."
Another possibility is that the Brutakhi are connected to the Mountain Jews of Daghestan, who are believed to have ruled independent states at points in their history.

During this period Juhuri traditions speak of unification under a single war-leader or nagid.
The Juhuri may be the people referred to as "Brutakhi" by Fra Giovanni di Carpini, a Papal legate who visited the Mongol Khan Guyuk in the 1250's.
Giovanni included them among a list of nations who paid homage to the Mongol Khan, and added that they were Jews who traditionally shaved their heads.
