BRUTE FORCE B+, B+ Often billed as the film that brought stardom to Burt Lancaster, Brute Force is a hard hitting prison drama that plays more as an ensemble showcase culminating in an ultimate confrontation between the evil Captain Munsey and convict leader Joe Collins.
Brute Force looks as fresh and audacious as the day it was born with an excellent mono soundtrack embellishing the pictures.
Dassin flatly states, "I want to forget all films I made for MGM." In recalling Brute Force, Dassin indicated that the flashback sequences water down the film and he objected to their use, though it was a battle he obviously lost.

A sense of doom hovers over everything, culminating in an explosive finale, but the barbaric, brutish violence hangs in the air long after the film is over.
"Brute Force" is one of the most violent film noirs of the classic era, as well as one of the most pessimistic -and this is after some violence was removed to comply with the Production Code.
The flashbacks get in the way of the movie, but otherwise this is an excellent men-in-prison flick, with an exciting let's-try-to-break-out ending.

In 1947, Brute Force was sharply criticized for its gritty violence.
But one can't criticize it; the movie's use of violence is used to build an atmosphere appropriate to the dark, hard-edged prison movie that it is.
As such, this is a good prison movie but not the classic it might have been.

The aspect of an audience rooting for the prisoners plotting a jailbreak is given a sharp turnabout, at the proper time, to point up that brute force by prisoners is as wrong as the brute force exercised by their keepers."
From The Movie Guide: "Classic prison melo, BRUTE FORCE followed THE KILLERS, for Burt Lancaster, establishing him as a dangerously sexy lug in the most interesting period of his career.

Exactly the kind of movie you'd expect from a future fllisted director: hard-hitting and unrepentantly liberal.
But this is still a tough movie, even now; the murder of a stool pigeon is chilling, and the Grand Guignol climax is still shocking (albeit exciting as well).
The climax is quite shocking given the fact that the movie was released 57 years ago.

I was underwhelmed by the "legendary" 1947 prison movie "Brute Force," directed by the "legendary" director Jules Dassin, who was fllisted in Hollywood a few years later and went to Europe to make some critically acclaimed films.
The great prison escape movie is Robert Bresson's "A Condemned Man Escapes," and that should definitely be sought out by anyone who hasn't seen it.
For those not interested in assessing the oeuvre of Jules Dassin or the history of prison movies, the interest of "Brute Force:" might be in the supporting actors or in the showcasing first lead role of Burt Lancaster.

Prison movies (and prison TV shows) are a genre unto themselves, and there are many genre requirements:
Howard Duff with an army-issue machine gun is but one example of how this movie goes above and beyond the usual prison fare.
The preachy scenes involving the prison's resident conscience--I mean doctor--are worth fast-forwarding through (unfortunately those scenes are also genre requirements), and Burt tends to lapse into that sensitive Frankenstein acting that he does so well, but man, what a climax to this movie.

I did not pay attention to the quality of the transfer, with a 1947 vintage I guess the fact that the transfer did not intrude in my enjoyment of the movie is what's most important.

Superstring theory (sometimes just called string theory) has as its basic premise the belief that the four fundamental forces of nature (gravity, electromagnetism, and strong and weak nuclear forces), as well as all matter are simply different manifestations of a single essence.
This essence, the material making up all energy and matter, is thought to consist of tiny (a hundred billion billion times smaller than the nucleus of an atom) vibrating strings that exist in a multi-dimensional (10 or 26 dimensions) hyperspace.
