Bryan Forbes, who directed Whistle Down the Wind and the original The Stepford Wives, has been awarded a CBE for services to the arts.
Forbes worked on a number of scripts before his breakthrough at the age of 33, when he won critical acclaim for his screenplay for Basil Dearden's The League of Gentlemen.
Forbes was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1975, and put his subsequent remission down to a gluten-free diet and a loving wife.

That was probably Bryan Forbes' pitch for Deadfall, an enjoyable enough glossy thriller set in Spain before it raises the ante too much in the second half and loses its grip about the same time as Mrs Forbes, Nanette Newman, turns up to give a horrendously bad performance that'll bring your dinner up.
Aside from Gerry Turpin's superb photography, its main distinction is the famous robbery sequence intercut with John Barry conducting his Guitar Concerto a la Bernard Herrmann in The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Began his career as an actor, formed the Beaver Films production company with Richard Attenborough in 1959, and proved himself as a director in the 1960s with sensitive studies of everyday life such as WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND (1961) and THE L-SHAPED ROOM (1963).
In 1969 Forbes was appointed head of production at London's Elstree Studios, but resigned the post after two years in order to concentrate on writing (he went on to produce several bestselling novels).
Wife Nanette Newman has appeared in many of his films.
