TrekToday - Wonder Falls for Bryan Fuller's Career
Asked about parallels with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fuller said he thought that show broke ground by having "the ditzy cheerleader, who usually is the first person to be killed off, be the hero", but added that his own heroine is somewhat different: "Jaye's...not the ass-kicker; she's scrappy, but she doesn't have superhuman powers."
Calling his show a "grounded fantasy", Fuller suggested that there would be more comedy than heavy drama and said that having a female lead allowed a greater range of emotional exploration.
Comparing his new series to his previous work, Fuller said that he loved science fiction and fantasy but was attracted to the reality of a grounded universe.

TrekWeb.com - Review: See the Wonder of Bryan Fuller's New Series WONDERFALLS, Debuting Friday
Executive producers Bryan Fuller (VOYAGER, DEAD LIKE ME), Todd Holland (MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE), and Tim Minear (ANGEL, FIREFLY), however, are hoping that their series is better positioned than its shamelessly "overeducated and unemployable" heroine.
This is no surprise coming from Fuller, who's unique perspective and obsession with comic books produced VOY's "Bride of Chaotica!" and unconventional episodes like "Living Witness." Reflexive humor and satire were also key ingredients in the Whedon series ANGEL and FIREFLY, where Minear cut his teeth.
Being a huge fan of Bryan's other show Dead Like Me (which he abandoned due to creative differences after a couple eps, still a great show), I got around to see Wonderfalls tonight and enjoyed it a LOT.
