MacLean’s "Alone Again Or" is the opening cut on Forever Changes and although Arthur Lee mixed MacLean’s lead vocal under his own harmony, MacLean’s song and the recording have become regarded as a classic.

 Bryan MacLean - Biography
Bryan MacLean guitarist, singer and songwriter of the cult 60's Californian band Love, died of a heart attack on Christmas day 1998 in the city of Los Angeles where he was born.
Bryan desperately wanted to join the band and he said, "I'd give my right arm to be in your group." To which Arthur responded "No - you're going to need it!" The Grass Roots became Love when another group registered a hit with the name.
Bryan joined a Christian Fellowship Church called the Vineyard, "The guy that led the church was the guy that converted Bob Dylan." During Friday night Bible stints Bryan took the concert part of the session and was so amazed at the reaction he gradually assembled a catalogue of his Christian songs.

BRYAN MACLEAN was a member of the 1960s group Love, for whom he wrote Alone Again Or, one of the most enduring and evocative songs of the era.
MacLean briefly led a band bearing his own name in the early 1980s which included his half-sister Maria McKee, but when she formed the critically acclaimed Lone Justice he was invited to contribute only as a writer.

Bryan MacLean - Biography - AOL Music
As the secondary songwriter in the renowned folk-rock/psychedelic group Love, guitarist and vocalist Bryan MacLean was overshadowed by that group's driving force, singer/songwriter Arthur Lee.
Yet MacLean did manage to squeeze a few of his own compositions onto the group's first three albums: "Softly to Me," "Orange Skies," "Old Man," and "Alone Again Or." MacLean's tunes had a lighter, poppier touch than Lee's, but also had a similar evanescent, mystical glow, enhanced by MacLean's odd trembling vocals.
In 1997, Sundazed released a collection of solo acoustic MacLean demos, ifyoubelievein, that were mostly recorded back in Love's 1966-1967 heyday (some material from 1972 and 1982 was also included).

Maclean was not yet in the desperate state he would be in the late 60s/early 70s, but he was far from drug free.
Maclean later tried to distance himself from the lyrics saying they were only of their time and that they should be taken literally.
Maclean said the words should be taken literally, and (apparently slightly embarrassed) said they were of their time.

 Adrian's Album Reviews : Love
Bryan MacLean introduced 'Hey Joe' to the Love camp (a song also performed by The Byrds and The Leaves around the same time) re-writing some of the words, before 'Hey Joe' became the property of Jimi Hendrix alone.
Bryan MacLean came to Love as a former Byrds roadie, which must have seemed a wonderful thing in a Love camp indebted to The Byrds - a debt audibly noticeable across a good half of this record.
Bryan MacLean's 'Alone Again Or' is an instant classic, and it's something of a mystery as to why Bryan himself was apparently unhappy with the way it turned out.

Like the 1997 release If You Believe In, this is a dip into the vault of MacLean solo demos, revealing that the ethereal singer/songwriter had a wealth of compositions that never made it onto Love records.
In fact, not a single one of these songs was included on Love's first three albums, though a few of them had been written before his departure from the band (and a couple of them appear, in different versions, on If You Believe In).
Seven were done in New York in 1971, a couple were recorded live in 1976-77, and the rest date from the early 1980s (though, according to the liner notes, just five of the 19 songs were written after 1970).

As all of the songs feature nothing but MacLean's acoustic guitar and voice, they may as well have all been done in the late 1960s.
Be warned that some may find this way too sappy: MacLean often sounds as if he's composing/singing love letters right off the top of his head, with a sense of phrasing that would be as at home in theatrical musicals as folk coffeehouses.

One of the finest things to come out of L.A. in the 60's was Love, led by the crazy genius of Arthur Lee who fully eclipsed bandmate Maclean (who wrote 3 or 4 of Love's finest songs) after Bryan left the band nobody heard from him on record again until this '97 release.
Bryan's mom found these tapes of his acoustic song demos and the good folks at Sundazed have allowed them to see the light of day.

MacLean's best songs are still "Alone Again Or" and "Old Man," the two compositions that ended up on Forever Changes (an excellent demo of "Old Man" concludes the CD).
Even if relatively few MacLean compositions were permitted to interefere with Arthur Lee's material on Love's early albums, it seems likely that MacLean had a substantial influence on Lee's writing and, more noticeably, the Johnny Mathis-like vocal delivery that characterized Lee's vocals on Forever Changes.
Presumably, lines such as "ladies should be used and simply tossed aside like worn-out shoes" (from "Strong Commitment") make the composer wince today, but there are some good songs here, such as "Fresh Hope," "Kathleen," and "She Looks Good," that would have been worthy inclusions on early Love LPs.

The album begins with "Alone Again Or" (a minor hit for The Damned in 1986) written and sung by Love's second songwriter Bryan Maclean.
According to Maclean, who died in 1999 at the age of 52, the song was mixed with the harmony vocal (Arthur Lee's vocal) as the dominant voice in the mix, thus the melody is virtually buried.
Bryan Maclean contributes one more track to the album, the ballad "Old Man," before Arthur Lee's "The Red Telephone" closes what would have originally been side one.
