There are over seventeen hundred amateurs in this part of Ontario, over three hundred amateurs in the London/Middlesex area, in excess of two hundred are members of the London Amateur Radio Club and over fifty are registered with A.R.E.S. Amateurs are allocated a large portion of the radio spectrum for experimentation and public service.
Normally, when the Police, Fire or Public Works Supervisor at the emergency site considers the situation, or potential situation, is of a serious nature beyond the capability of the emergency services to manage or support without outside assistance, he/she will begin the process to activate the municipality's Emergency Plan.
It should be noted that once this is done, all volunteers requested and registered as assisting with the emergency are deemed to be employees of the municipality under the Workers' Compensation Act.
