Moss - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Other differences are not universal for all mosses and all liverworts but the presence of clearly differentiated stem and leaves, the lack of deeply lobes or segmented leaves, and the absence of leaves arranged in three ranks all point to the plant being a moss.
The division Bryophyta included not only mosses, but also liverworts and hornworts, but these two groups are often now placed in their own divisions.
Mosses were traditionally grouped with the liverworts and hornworts in the Division Bryophyta (bryophytes), within which the mosses made up the class Musci.

BRYOPHYTA - LoveToKnow Article on BRYOPHYTA
In all plants higher than the Bryophyta the sporophyte becomes an independently rooted plant and is the conspicuous stage in the life-history.
On the other hand, the Sphagnales show such considerable and importar~t differences from the rest of the mosses, that like the Anthocerotales among the liverworts, they may be regarded as a group, the relationship of which to the main stem is at least problematical.
With regard to the relationship of the Bryophyta and Pteridophyta the article on the latter group should be consulted.

 Mosses and liverworts, simple plants?
Mosses (Bryophyta) are quite interesting, simple green land plants with leaves and a stem and always without roots.
The plant is normally attached to the ground by delicate, colourless or brown threads, the rhizoids.
The Phylum Bryophyta (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) has recently been split by taxonomists into three separate phyla: Bryophyta (mosses), Hepatophyta (liverworts) and Anthocerophyta (hornworts) e.g.

Most fungi do live on land, but they are dependent on the occurrence there of plants and animals to supply the food materials necessary for their heterotrophic existence.
As you look at the diversity of plants which occur in this group and study the details of the life cycle of one representative, try to see in what ways the plants are adapted to life in air and in what ways they fall short of being well-adapted land plants.
Our goal is not only to see the form of these organisms, but also to begin to understand their life cycles, and follow the evolution leading to higher plants on earth.

Evidence for RNA Editing in Mitochondria of all Major Groups of Land Plants Except the Bryophyta -- Hiesel et al. 91 ...
To determine the distribution of mitochondrial RNA editing in the plant kingdom, we have now undertaken a survey of evolutionarily distant plants.
RNA editing occurs in all major groups of land plants except the Bryophyta, suggesting that this process is an ancient trait that was established before the radiation of kormophyte plants.
No editing is observed in representatives of the green algae, suggesting that editing arose in early land plants after the split of the Bryophyta or has been lost selectively in both algae and mosses.
