Despite it being alongside a railroad, Bryson remained a quiet town - described by the Handbook of Texas as "a business and school community of area cattlemen." Oil was discovered in Jack County in 1898, but no one really knew what to do with the stuff.
Bryson was soon Jack County's "second city." Incorporated in 1931, it had just over 800 residents by 1947 - the high-water mark.

Bryson, on U.S. Highway 380 fourteen miles southwest of Jacksboro in southwestern Jack County, was known until the early 1880s as Mount Hecla, then renamed in honor of Henry Bryson, who built the first residence, a log house, in 1878 and later became a county commissioner.
Though oil was discovered in the county in 1898, not until the mid-1920s did Bryson become the processing center for local oil producers.
Oil increased the town's population until Bryson became the second largest town in the county.

James Gordon Bryson, physician and author, the son of Joseph Goodson and Elizabeth (Anderson) Bryson, was born on October 6, 1884, in Liberty Hill, Williamson County, Texas.
Bryson established his medical practice in Pearsall and soon moved to Bastrop; he received training in surgery in Austin in 1918 but after a brief stay in Marlin returned to Bastrop.
Bryson returned to the University of Texas at the age of seventy-two to study history.
