Kuyavia - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
After his death in 1267 the duchy was further divided onto two separate lands ruled by his successors, with capitals in Inowrocław and Brześć Kujawski.
However, their control over these lands was found unlawful by the papal court and until 1364 the area was gradually reconquered by Poland.
As part of Poland, the area retained its traditional division onto two separate parts, that was sanctioned by the administrative division onto Inowrocław Voivodship and Brześć Kujawski Voivodship, that shared the same Sejmik in Radziejów.

Antiquity, Project Gallery: Czerniak et al
The Brzesc Kujawski type settlement is a characteristic, spatially extensive (2-6ha) group of many longhouses and repeated through many centuries, which consists of several trapezoidal longhouses (Jazdzewski 1938; Gabalówna 1966; Czerniak 1980; 1994; 2002; Bogucki 1982; 1988; Grygiel and Bogucki 1997).
Brzesc Kujawski is the best known site (Jazdzewski 1938; Grygiel 1986), but similar extensive and long-lived settlements are known from Krusza Zamkowa, Biskupin, Koscielec Kujawski, Zegotki, Kuczkowo, Oslonki (Kujawy) and Racot (Wielkopolska) (for a list of settlements, see Czerniak 2002).
Summing up, during one season of limited flying valuable aerial data were acquired on two Brzesc Kujawski type settlements and several myths were debunked concerning the Early Neolithic in the Polish Lowlands and the applicability of aerial photography in Poland.

 Brzesc Kujawski
Brzesc Kujawski and Oslonki show evidence of ground moraines deposited by the Weichsel ice sheet during the last glacial period.
It is believed that during this period, the settlements of Brzesc Kujawski and Oslonki began to trade and communicate more actively.
While the goals of the research were originally to reconstruct the physical landscape of Neolithic Brzesc Kujawski, the discovery of several longhouses, houses remains, storage pits, flint industries, copper artifacts, and human skeletons led to a new focus.

Changing Neolithic Landscapes at Brzesc Kujawski, Poland
The terrain around Brzesc Kujawski and Oslonki is typical of the glaciated landscape of the North European Plain.
This belief is based on the fact that on the basis of both radiocarbon dates and artifact typology the large settlements at Brzesc Kujawski and Oslonki are exactly contemporaneous, although the settlement at Brzesc Kujawski was apparently longer-lived.
At the same time, however, the intensity of disturbance at Brzesc Kujawski and Oslonki must have been such that these localities were still visible as "different", even if the traces of houses and rubbish pits had disappeared.

The Neolithic Mosaic on the North European Plain
Settlements of the Brzesc Kujawski Group of the Lengyel culture appeared in north-central Poland around 4500 b.c.
At Brzesc Kujawski, nearly 50 houses have been identified, many of which are associated with storage pits, workshop features, and graves (Grygiel 1986).
With the arrival of agriculturalists on the southern fringe of this zone, including the Lengyel settlements at Brzesc Kujawski and environs, this problem was alleviated.

In 1452 the Royal Castle in Koło was the place of meeting between the king Casimir the Jagiellonian and the representatives of the Prussian Union (see: the Thirteen-Years War).
Since the early 15th century till 1716 Koło was the meeting place of the Provincial Parliament (Sejmik Generalny) for Greater Poland, comprising the Poznan Voivodship, Kalisz Voivodship, Sieradz Voivodship, Leczyca Voivodship, Brzesc Kujawski Voivodship and Inowroclaw Voivodship)
The town evolved as a regional centre of trade and crafts, especially in metals and textiles, and in 16th century a suburb of Zduny consisting mainly of potters developed on the right bank of Warta river, receiving a separate municipal autonomy in 1559.

 History of archaeology
Since Oslonki was occupied at the same time as the nearby settlement at Brzesc Kujawski, paths and trails were undoubtedly cut through the forest.
Since both Oslonki and Brzesc Kujawski were both abandoned about 4000 B.C., the question exists as to whether they outstripped the ability of the local ecosystem to support their inhabitants.
The investigation of this issue is one of the key research question to be addressed in the next few years.

Bogdan Pokropinski’s book “Kujawskie Koleje Dojazdowe”, published by Poznanski Klub Modelarzy Kolejowych in 1994, is a good history of the network and copies may still be available.

And yet the later Bronze Age and the Iron Age are perceived as periods marking a major change from a lifestyle and landscape centred on mobility to one of settled living.
Current preferences in landscape archaeological interpretation suggest that the argument for Neolithic sedentism is untenable, even from sites such as Brzesc Kujawski and Lepinski Vir, long held to represent ‘permanent’ residence related to early agriculture.
If Brzesc Kujawski isn’t sedentary, then we need to assess how we would expect sedentism to appear through the archaeological record.
