Bubona is the Roman Cow-Goddess who watches over and protects cattle, and oversees their multiplication and health.
Bubona may have originally been a guardian spirit of horses as well; but when the Romans encountered the Gauls, they adopted Epona as the Horse-Goddess par excellence.
Both Bubona and Epona protected the stables and the creatures within, and little shrines to Them were made in niches in the walls, or on the pillar holding up the barn roof.

 North Berwick Town History
By nine o'clock in the evening, the wind had strengthened to near hurricane force, and the vessel was spotted in difficulties inside the Bass, her sails had given-way and the crew had no choice but to make for the shore.
They fired four-rockets over the vessel and were successful in landing a line across the stern of the boat but the crew who appeared to be lashed in the bows, were too exhausted to take advantage of the situation.
The loss of the 'Bubona' and her crew was felt deeply by the community and to avoid such a tragedy happening again, a move to have the town's first lifeboat was instigated by Rev. Stewart from Liberton and coastguards Walter Malcolm and Captain Thomas Woodrow.

Without the mad rites of Mars and Bellona they carried on war; and while, indeed, they did not conquer without victory, yet they did not hold it to be a goddess, but the gift of their God.
Without Segetia they had harvests; without Bubona, oxen; honey without Mellona; apples without Pomona: and, in a word, everything for which the Romans thought they must supplicate so great a crowd of false gods, they received much more happily from the one true God.
And if they had not sinned against Him with impious curiosity, which seduced them like magic arts, and drew them to strange gods and idols, and at last led them to kill Christ, their kingdom would have remained.
