Although the entire area of present-day Missouri was included in the Louisiana Purchase, the western border of Missouri was set on the North-South line passing through the Arkansas western corner.
This left an area west of this line and east of the Missouri River that was ceded to the indian tribes by the Prarie du Chien treaty.
The western border ran northward from the corner of Platte County 42 miles and 52 chains in the center of the Missouri River.

When appointed commissioners selected the county seat for Buchanan County, they chose a quarter section about seven miles south of St. Joseph, where the court convened in 1840 in a private home.
The county seat was named Benton first, in honor of Sen. Thomas Hart Benton, but this did not meet with popular approval, so the court changed the name to Sparta.
County government grew rapidly from the 1840s until 1870, and even before the architects examined the deteriorating courthouse, citizens called for a new and larger one.

The proposed project would involve improvement of the existing U.S. Highway 59 corridor from the city of Atchison, Kansas over the Missouri River to the U.S. 59/State Route 45 Intersection in Buchanan County, Missouri for a distance of about 6.3 kilometers (3.9 miles) in length.
Improvements to the corridor are considered needed to provide for the existing and projected traffic demands, improve safety, improve access to Atchison, Kansas, promote local and regional economic stability, and to address the deficiencies of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge over the Missouri River.
