Buchanan Street station on the Glasgow Subway (which also serves Queen Street Station) is underneath the north end of Buchanan Street.
Buchanan Street Bus Station was opened at the northern end in 1978, at the same time as the street itself was pedestrianised between Bath St. and Argyle Street.
Buchanan Street cuts through Nelson Madelela Place (which was renamed after the former South African president) the site of St George's-Tron Church and the Glasgow Stock Exchange Building, and Royal Exchange Square, which now houses the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art.

The Buchanan Galleries is a shopping mall located in the central area of Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland.
Costing £250 million, it is one of the largest city centre shopping developments in the United Kingdom, boasting an internal retail space of nearly 56,000 sq m.
Before the mall was built, the northern end of Buchanan Street was very run down, and was full of derelict buildings (the site was once the home to the Glasgow branch of the NAAFI), and half abandoned stores.

The daddy of the three malls, in terms of size, is the long-awaited Buchanan Galleries which opened in Spring 1999 to a storm of protest from disappointed architects and designers and equal numbers of nonplussed punters who were too busy shopping to notice the surroundings.
Other shops within the Galleries include a huge Habitat (with café and changing gallery programme), a great little flower shop in the foyer area, Gap, Levi’s, Jane Norman, Oasis, and the monumental John Lewis - the only department store to rival the omnipresence of House of Fraser which is further down Buchanan Street.
While some dream of ringing the doorbells of the Italian Centre, equal numbers of beautiful people are content to look for their one-offs at smaller ‘homegrown’ clothing stores and second hand outlets (or ‘vintage/antique’ stores as they are known when in fashion), found in the Merchant City and the West End.
