  Buchis Bulls
The Cult of Buchis, Sacred Bull of Armant
These bulls were buried in a similar way to those of the Apis bulls, however, the tombs of the Buchis were built structures covered by vaulting rather than rock-hewn caverns.
Unlike the Apis burials the latest burials of the Buchis were left in the passages which linked the tombs.

The center of the Buchis cult was the town of Armant.

Because of his relationship with Amun and the Ogdoad of Hermopolis, buried near Medinet Habu, Buchis could even be considered a primeval god.
Just as Apis was the 'Ba' of the god Ptah of Memphis, Buchis was seen as the living 'Ba' of Re and the Egyptian name of the animal is thus explained by the priests ('living Ba' is 'ba ankh' in Egyptian).
Buchis is depicted with the tall feathers of Montu on his head; a sun disk can often be seen between the horns.

 Bull Cults
The bull had a fl face and a white body and was thought to be a manifestation of Ka (life-force) of the war god mntj (Montu), worshipped in the region of Hermonthis.
The tombs of the Buchis were similar to that of the Apis, but the structures were topped by vaulted roof rather than carved into the living rock. Some of the tombs contained a large stor of funerary equipment, while others contained only the mummy of the Buchis.
Some of the more recent Buchis mummies were interred in the passages which linked the older tombs, and all of the burials date from the Late Period.

Apis Bulls - what were they?
It is fl, with a white diamond on its forehead, the image of an eagle on its back, two white hairs on its tail and a scarab-beetle mark under its tongue".
The Apis bulls (along with the Mnevis bull and the Buchis bull) were considered to be the earthly incarnation of a god - but unlike other animals who could only intercede with deities on behalf of humans, the Apis Bull was believed to be the very god himself living amongst the human population.
Apis was the manifestation of Osiris, Mnevis of Re-Atum and Buchis of Re, all three were chosen for their special markings and were indeed treated as gods on earth - when the bulls died they were then mourned, mummified and then buried with the same glory that occurred with the death of a pharaoh.

Egyptian gods: Buchis - Sacred Bull of Armant   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Buchis (Egyptian: Bekh) from Armant (Hermonthis) in province # four of Upper Egypt was one of three great bull cults in Egypt (besides Apis/Memphis and Mnervis/Heliopolis).
His cult was continued by the Greeks and after them by the Romans and it lasted until almost 400 A.D. Buchis was a manifestation of Osiris and Re and was also linked to the local god of war and his companion Mentu and later also Amon.
In Armant two new local features were added: their cow-mother was buried too and the body was fixed in a standing position on a foundation made of wooden planks.

 Sacred Egyptian Bull Mummies
The Buchis cult survived until AD 362, while the cult of the Apis bull was the last to survive until the Emperor Honorius banned it and caused the destruction of the Serapeum, the cult and burial place of the bull, in AD 398.
Late Period examples of mummified Buchis bulls from Armant provide more information about the mummification of cult animals, although this too is limited due to the water-damaged state of the bodies.
The mummies were prepared by removing the internal organs through the anus, possibly with the help of turpentine or some other oleo-resin which would be injected into the body cavity and plugged up until the viscera had softened and could come out of the orifice.
