The only source we have which gives us any insight into the political structure of the Rhine and Danube barbarians is Ammianus, and he does not suggest that there was any idea of an Alamannic or Frankish unity at all.
Instead, he discusses various groups of barbarians, such as the Bucinobantes or Lentienses, who can sometimes be united by a capable leader to create a serious threat (e.g.
The same lack of structure is apparent in Ammianus' account of Sarmatians and Goths (and see Peter Heather's Goths and Romans for an excellent analysis of this).

 Leagues, confederations and tribes
The "Suebi" seem to have been more of a loose federation or linked league of tribes, probably connected by common religious traditions.
In the case of the Alamanni, it could be that when the various tribes of this region combined warbands to go on an extended raiding expedition or campaign they called themselves "all the men" - ie the united warbands of the Juthugi, Bucinobantes etc.
It may be that, later, as this kind of co-operation became more common, the pickings over the border got easier and neighbouring tribes began uniting as well (eg the Franks) this loose federation became slowly tighter, until the name referred to a larger federated tribe rather than an opportunitistic collection of warbands.

Hello, I am having trouble pinpointing 2 tribes that were located relatively close to each other that had not crossed the Rhine before 400AD.
I am looking for sub-tribes of the Alamanni or Suebi, such as the Juthungi, Bucinobantes, Lentienses, Armalausi or others.
I eventually need to get down to daily life/names, etc once I get two tribes I am confident with.
