		One story is that the original is "butt naked" and that "buck naked" is either a euphemism or a mishearing.
		Originally a 'buck' was a dandy, a pretentious, overdressed show-off of a man. Condescendingly applied in the U.S. to Native Americans and fl slaves, it quickly acquired negative connotations.
		Buck naked, slang for 'completely naked' came on the scene in the late 1920's, and the qualified buck-ass naked a bit later.

		The Cassell Dictionary of Slang lists "buck naked" as early 19th Century and speculates, as did one of your sources, on "buck" as a variation on "butt"; but until someone comes up with an actual early citation, I'll stand by my etymology as more likely.
		Starting around 1530, another expression of the form "X naked", where X was a word for "buttocks" ending in a /t/, was changed into a new expression "Y naked", where Y was X with the final /t/ changed to /k/.
		So "butt naked" would be a straightforward calque of a common expression whose word for "butt" had dropped out of the language.

		I have a feeling that an alternate form of this expression is "naked as a buck", and that the proposed origin stemming from buck equalling butt/buttocks is wrong.
		My suspicion is that the "buck" referred to is a derogatory term for a Native American brave or warrior, though some further research on the www shows that "buck" was also used to apply to male fl slaves in the days of the US slave trade.
		In both cases at the time, both ethnic minorities would have been viewed as lowly savages and not liable to be wearing the trappings of white supposedly civilised society in their natural state.
