With Buckeye Bullet, however, students had free rein to build the fastest vehicle possible and were bound only by the limits of physics, engineering and safety.
Buckeye Bullet goes from zero to 241 mph in about 90 seconds, said Maria Soliman, associate director of the OSU auto center.
Buckeye Bullet has cost the university and project sponsors about $500,000 so far, not counting the thousands of unpaid hours put in by student volunteers, most of them undergraduates.

The Buckeye Bullet is attending the annual SpeedWeek event at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Buckeye Bullet Team Leader, Isaac Harper and driver Roger Schroer will be interviewed live from the Salt on Monday night by WOSU AM 820's Tom Wiebell on Tom's Open Line Program sometime between 7PM and 8PM.  The broadcast will be streamed live over the Internet at WOSU.
The Bullet will resume testing at TRC, Inc., in the next few weeks, and will see some minor adjustments in the aerodynamics and electronics in preparation for the World Finals, to be held next October 13-16 at Bonneville, when the team will attempt to set a new FIA world land speed record.

The Buckeye Bullet, which currently holds the official U.S. land speed record for electric-powered vehicles at 256.894 mph, set last October at Bonneville, is a student project at OSU's Center for Automotive Research in Columbus, Ohio.
The 2004 Buckeye Bullet Electric Land Speed Racing Team consists entirely of undergraduate students, and the car is driven this year by professional driver Roger Schroer, manager of driver training at TRC, Inc.

Rizzoni said the Bullet is one of only 54 other teams to break the 300mph barrier and the first-ever electric vehicle to do so.

Todd Rodrick, team manager and senior in mechanical engineering, said the Buckeye Bullet was conceived two-and-one-half years ago by a Smokin' Buckeye team sponsor after watching a television program covering electric land speed racers.
"The thing with the Buckeye Bullet is that we have a working rudder in it also, so it requires the knowledge of a pilot," Rodrick said.

The Buckeye Bullet project began in May of 2000 when the team put a simulation together to determine the feasibility of the project.
Before leaving for the Salt Flats, the Smokin’ Buckeye’s parameters were plugged into the simulation and a top speed of 143 mph was predicted.

The student-run team that designed the Bullet claims on its website to have the national record of 315 mph and international record of 272 mph, both set last October at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah (the two records have different judging criteria).
(The FIA didn't return Gelf's call for comment Thursday.) So the Buckeye Bullet's record was sanctioned only by the Bonneville Nationals Inc. That allows the Brits and their e-motion team to shoot at a lower target in Nevada this week.
Gelf called Paul Foy, who wrote the AP story, and it was the first he'd heard of Buckeye Bullet.
