The Buckeye Trail is the first and only long distance hiking trail located entirely within the State of Ohio that traverses over 40 of Ohio's 88 counties.
Recognition of the unique status of this trail was given in 1967 when the Ohio General Assembly passed a resolution recognizing the Buckeye Trail as a unique hiking trail existing entirely within the State of Ohio.
The Buckeye Trail Association is a nonprofit corporation formed in 1959 initially to establish the trail between Mentor Headlands Beach on Lake Erie and Eden Park in Cincinnati.

However, the Buckeye Trail is not all of the NCT in Ohio, and long distance users will have to penetrate a fair distance into the state before encountering the Buckeye Trail.
The Buckeye Trail is marked by light blue paint blazes on trees, poles, etc., usually within 10 feet of the trail.
The majority of the next 110 miles of trail is located off roads on the Buckeye Trail, in the national forest and on a variety of state, local, and private lands, and will treat visitors to some of Ohio's most outstanding scenery.

Taking the trail to the left at this point leads to heavy brush and a scramble up a steep and rocky point which is especially precarious with a sizable pack on.
I cannot give adequate justice to how breathtaking the Buckeye trail and camp is. Poison oak and flies are definitely a consideration (one of my fellow hikers got a bad enough case of PO to require prescription medication, but the rest of us got none at all).
But as this trail parallels the ocean as it steadily climbs to the high point of about 2,250 feet (before descending to Buckeye Camp at 2,140 feet), you are treated to some absolutely magnificent ocean views throughout the hike.

The Buckeye Trail has been selected among 50 trails nationwide as part of a national initiative to enhance and celebrate the nation's trails, and to work toward establishing a nationwide network of trails.
The Millennium Trails Initiative is a collaborative effort of the White House Millennium Council, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC).
To select the 50 trails, governors from all 50 states and leaders of U.S. territories were invited to submit nominations to a Green Ribbon panel of national trail leaders convened by the RTC.

 Buckeye Trail
The trail is identified by blue blazes, 2" wide by 6" high, on trees or poles.
A single blaze marks the trail where the route is fairly straight or obvious, while a double blaze marks a turn with the upper blaze offset to indicate the new direction.
The trail is maintained and managed by the Buckeye Trail Association, a private, non-profit volunteer organization.

The Buckeye Trail enters the county from the north at Bowerston and follows a route which crosses the dam at Tappan Lake and connects Tappan Lake, Clendening Lake, and Piedmont Lake before entering Guernsey County southwest of Freeport.
The trail has been paved from Jewett to Scio, and paving of the balance of the trail is expected to begin in a few weeks, once final government approvals are obtained.
In Ohio that trail is the Buckeye Trail.

The governing boards of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District and the Buckeye Trail Association recently approved the lease of a barn owned by the MWCD and located on the shore of Tappan Lake for the purpose of providing a permanent facility for the BTA.
The Buckeye Trail is a 1,250-mile hiking trail that makes a large loop around the state of Ohio.
Forty-two miles of the trail are located in Harrison County, and the trail connects Seneca, Piedmont, Clendening, Tappan and Leesville lakes in the eastern portion of the state, all of which are operated by MWCD.

Planned, marked and mapped by volunteers, the Buckeye Trail Association (BTA) was established in 1959, originally to complete a trail from the Ohio River to Lake Erie; the association's goals were later modified to circle the state.
The trail follows along the old towpath for 3.0 miles, on an embankment between the canal and the river, with SR424 on the far side of the canal.
