		Taking advantage of low water levels in Lake Okeechobee, staff from the SFWMD carried out the largest authorized prescribed burn in Florida's history on Friday, Jan. 5 on Lake Okeechobee near the community of Buckhead Ridge in Glades County.
		A fire "prescription" was issued by the Florida Division of Forestry allowing about 14,000 acres along the shore from Pearce Canal to Indian Prairie Canal to be burned in order to reduce the biomass of torpedo grass and dead melaleuca trees so that herbicide treatments planned for later in the year will be more effective.
		Also participating in Friday's controlled burn was the Florida Division of Forestry, Glades County Sheriff's Department and the volunteer fire departments from both Buckhead Ridge and Lakeport.
