The county was named in honor of Willem Anne van Keppel, 2nd Earl of Albemarle and titular Governor of Virginia at the time.
The large county was divided up in 1761, forming Buckingham and Amherst counties, at which time the county seat was moved from the formerly-central Scottsville to a piece of newly-central land, christened Charlottesville.
In the county, the population was spread out with 24.80% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 30.90% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who were 65 years of age or older.

Franklin County was formed in 1785 out of portions of Henry County Virginia… There is portions of a 1764 tax list for Buckingham County that has survived, it is in alphabetical order and stops in the G’s, so we can not see what Mannon families lived there at that time….

The author, who has numerous titles on this "burned county", fills in the period just prior to the courthouse fire by transcribing the county clerk's death records from the surviving copy held by the state auditor of public accounts in Richmond.
Stinson's magnificent research series, "Historical Records of Buckingham County, Virginia." She utilizes the poll lists for contested federal or state elections to locate residents of this burned county in space (voting district) and time.

The Buckingham Hemmings are descended from Betsy Hemmings, who was born a slave at Monticello in 1783.
