   Professor Graham Martin
The Southern Ground Hornbill Bucorvus leadbeateri is a group-living bird, usually with a single female (recognised by the dark violet-blue patch on the red throat skin) that is joined by her mate, the alpha male (with all-red facial skin), and often by additional adult males and immature offspring of both sexes.
The Northern Ground Hornbill (previously often known as the Abyssian Ground Hornbill) Bucorvus abyssinicus differs obviously in the high cowl-like casque that sumounts the heavy bill, and also in that the adult male has red and blue facial skin while in the female the skin is all-blue.
Ground hornbills are placed separately in their own genus Bucorvus, in the subfamily based on that name, and sometimes are even separated into their own family, so different are they from other hornbills.
