 Air Bud
What sporadic fun is to be found in "Air Bud," directed by Charles Martin Smith, comes from its sight gags: Buddy wallowing in a bubble bath, Buddy streaking across the basketball court with sneakers on all four paws.
Otherwise the movie is so wan and by-the-numbers that what should have been a sure-fire tear-jerking scene in which Josh and Buddy are briefly parted will leave your eyes as dry as the Sahara.
Unless that dog is Buddy, the wondrous basket-shooting golden retriever who is the woofy, wagging hero of the pallid little Disney comedy "Air Bud."

CNN - Review: Your kids should pass on 'Air Bud: Golden Receiver' - August 19, 1998
Watching an Air Bud installment without the original Buddy is like sitting down for a Saturday afternoon dose of "The Three Stooges," only to get five Shemps and no Curlys.

 Barnes & Noble.com - Biography - Buddy Hackett
The son of a Brooklyn upholsterer, baby-faced comic actor Buddy Hackett always claimed he was "born to be funny." Hackett was the boy who invariably blew his lines in the Holiday pageants and the overweight teen who accidentally stuck his foot in a water bucket during his first game with the high school football team.
Among Buddy Hackett's many television credits was the 1978 biopic Bud and Lou, in which he offered a curiously unsympathetic interpretation of his idol, Lou Costello; ironically, back in 1954 Hackett had replaced an ailing Costello in the Universal slapstick comedy flick Fireman Save My Child.
Hackett was most active in films during the years 1958 through 1968, appearing primarily in nitwit comedy-relief roles, but also delivering a solid dramatic performance in God's Little Acre.
