Freeman (1906-90), whose centennial is being celebrated this month with the reissue of one of his greatest albums, approached the horn in a unique manner.
Freeman debuted his tour de force showstopper, "The Eel," in 1933 in a session under the name of Eddie Condon, the bandleader he was associated with for most of their long careers.
Freeman's earliest solos on "Sugar" and "China Boy" are rough and throaty in the manner of such clarinetists as Teschmacher and Pee Wee Russell.

Freeman, one of the top tenors of the 1930s, was also one of the few saxophonists (along with the slightly later Eddie Miller) to be accepted in the Dixieland world and his oddly angular but consistently swinging solos were an asset to a countless number of hot sessions.
Freeman, excited (as were the other members of the Austin High School Gang in Chicago) by the music of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, took up the C-melody sax in 1923, switching to tenor two years later.
Freeman travelled the world, made scores of fine recordings and stuck to the same basic style that he had developed by the mid-'30s (untouched by a brief period spent studying with Lennie Tristano).

Bud Freeman's autobiography is the story of a dream followed.
From the first glowing moment that Bud and his Austin High School buddies traveled to the South Side and heard young Louis [Armstrong] with King Oliver and Bessie Smith and Earl Hines and Jimmy Noonc, his life was transformed.
Bud Freeman's dream was to become a jazz musician, and together with his brother Arny, who sought with equal fervor to become an actor, he found his way into the passionate, open and often wild times of Prohibition-era Chicago.

Freeman continues to occupy an unfairly anomalous position in jazz history, and by the time of this recording his playing has about it the air of a brawnier Lester Young.
By comparison, Freeman in the company of the Welsh band errs slightly more on the reflective side, although there are of course times when the crowd is suitably roused, not least when Freeman employs a curiously antiquated vibrato.
In the case of both Davison and Freeman the old saying about not seeing their like again is entirely apposite, and the fact that both of the dates discussed here capture simply another night's work for working bands offers an insight into a world that to all intents and purposes is receding slowly from view.

Having recently returned to Chicago after an extended stay in England, Freeman is joined by a Chicago-based rhythm section (pianist Stuart Katz, guitarist Bob Roberts, bassist John Bany and drummer Barrett Deems) for two standards and five of his inventive and often witty originals.
In addition, Freeman duets with Roberts on "I Cover the Waterfront" and with Katz on a lyrical "My Romance."
