Wildman was first elected to the legislature in the provincial election of 1975, defeating incumbent Progressive Conservative Bernt Gilbertson by 398 votes.
Wildman's victory was regarded by many as an upset; he received support from NDP bastions such as Wawa, but also from more traditionally Conservative areas on the north shore of Lake Huron.
The NDP unexpectedly won the 1990 provincial election, and Wildman was appointed to cabinet as Minister of Natural Resources and Minister responsible for Native Affairs on October 1, 1990.

Bud Wildman, the popular former MPP and Cabinet Minister is indeed the NDP candidate in Sault Ste.
Given that Wildman retired from his provincial seat undefeated and that Sault Ste Marie was won by the provincial NDP with 43% of the vote last year, Wildman has an excellent chance of taking this seat federally.
Bud Wildman decided not to seek reelection provincially, either because he feeled he is too old, or that he could not beat Michael Brown in Algoma.

His father, Bud Wildman served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a New Democratic Party Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) from 1975 to 1999, representing the riding of Algoma, and was a cabinet minister in the government of Bob Rae.
Wildman was the federal NDP candidate for the constituency of Algoma-Manitoulin in 1997, finishing third and obtaining 24 per cent of the vote against incumbent Liberal MP, Brent St. Denis.

From the rarified heights occupied by Wildman and Copps, the picture must look a whole lot different than it does down on the gritty sands of the beaches, where, the last time I looked, people were staying out of the water in droves.
One can understand both Copps and Wildman trying to put the best face on a scheme that is reminiscent of a lot of earlier schemes that turned out to be hocus-pocus.

Hopes for a continued Wildman dynasty have been scotched for now, but their base remains strong, especially in the northern resource towns.
One thing's certain--it'll be a severe symbolic blow to the NDP if their anointed successor to Bud Wildman winds up in third.
The fact that Bud Wildman chose to resign rather than run in the new riding might indicate the weakness of the NDP in the Manitoulin area (they came in third last time).

Hon Charles Harnick (Attorney General, minister responsible for native affairs): There are still matters of appeal before the courts, there are civil actions before the courts, and my understanding is that the crown is continuing with three charges that are presently before the courts even though a couple of those charges have been withdrawn.
Mr Wildman: To deal with the minister responsible for native affairs and the Attorney General, the Supreme Court of Canada has given some clear guidelines regarding inquiries so there cannot be any excuse about legal issues pending in this particular situation.

Bud Wildman, Ontario's Minister of Environment and Energy, announced in December that the new interim standard for tritium in drinking water will be set at 7,000 becquerels per litre, down from the present standard of 40,000 becquerels per litre.
His Advisory Committee on Environmental Standards recommended in May that the standards be lowered to 100 Bq/l, and further lowered to 20 Bq/l within five years.

 Ontario's 3Rs Regulations: More Still to be Done
In October 1990, Ontario's then Minister of Environment and Energy, Bud Wildman, announced that this amount should be reduced by 25 percent by 1992 and by at least 50 percent by the year 2000.
There is no mechanism within the Waste Audit regulation to give greater credit to waste producers who divert waste from landfill by reducing or reusing rather than by recycling.
Minister Wildman stated that the 3Rs Regulations are expected to divert the equivalent of about 200,000 truckloads of waste every year from landfill.
