Budaixi, as the art form is known, is an omnipresent feature of Taiwan's cultural and political life.
Budaixi puppets feature the wooden expressions and jerky movements of early TV animations, but the characters, costumes and plots draw on ancient Chinese sources, with a heavy dose of martial arts and special effects.
Budaixi is the name for it in standard spoken Chinese, which the KMT forced the Taiwanese to use, but the natives still mostly speak a Fujian dialect.

While nanguan is melodic and soft, beiguan is loud and complex and is found across much of the island.
Budaixi hand-puppet theater and gezaixi (Taiwanese Opera) are very popular, while the latter is often considered the only truly indigenous Han form still extant today.
Holo folk music is most common today on the Hengchun Peninnsula in the southernmost part of the island, where performers sing accompanied by yueqin (moon guitar), which is a type of two-stringed lute.

It was also said that the dialogue was too modern and idiomatic, and that the plots were filled with magic powers and feats too ridiculous to be credible (the "flashiness" refers in part to the common sight of characters smiting enemies with magical light rays emitted from their hands).
Scholars and traditionalists are looking at "flashy budaixi" in a different light, placing traditional and innovative forms in the same genre.
Just as budaixi shifted from nanguan music to beiguan in the past, so high-tech budaixi is moving toward science fiction.

Much of the lyrics are in the native Taiwanese language, a choice consistent with the language's working class base, as well as the anti-Kuomintang Opposition culture.
Spoken monologues reminiscent of traditional melodrama (such as Budaixi, Taiwanese opera) are a favored device in their narratives.
LTK Commune's live performances are noted for their spontaneity and engagement with the crowd.

Cable TV not only gave Budaixi a new medium to perform on, but it also exposed the art to a much larger audience.

As for how HEPP should be categorized, Huang Wen-cheh laughingly says: "The latest budaixi should be called high-tech budaixi!" In fact, they do not aspire to become an elite troupe in the circle of traditional puppet troupes.
Despite the fact that TV and traditional budaixi have taken different paths, one thing that is still maintained is that one person does all the voices.
Wen-cheh, known as the "master of a thousand voices," says that the voicing of the dialogue is the very soul of budaixi, and gives a special flavor that cannot find a substitute in ensemble overdubbing.

Hou Hsiao-hsien, a brilliant Taiwanese director, made a stunning (it’s definitely his masterpiece, and many consider him one the world’s greatest living directors- he’s definitely one of my favorites) film in 1993 about one of Taiwan’s greatest budaixi puppeteers, Li Tien-Lu.
So you get to see a lot of amazing budaixi performances as well as listen to Li reminisce not only about the scene we just saw but about his profession and his life.

Traditionally, budaixi used a combination of Beijing and the Taiwan dialects, with each role having its specific linguistic form, some using vernacular, some using classical Chinese.
Thus did traditionalists- who felt they were being hurt by the vulgarization of their art form-attack the "reformers" of the "flashy budaixi" school.
Huang Churn-hsiung was the founder of "flashy budaixi." And the Huang brothers have turned puppets into a corporate enterprise.

A big difference between budaixi and live actors is that for the former the dialogue track is recorded first, and then it is up to the puppeteers to make the movements fit the dialogue and story line.
Puppeteers today must thus adapt themselves to the camera, doing the required movements within a definite camera field and with precision timing; but they understand nothing about live performances on the puppet stage.

Continuing as a popular folk form in later dynasties, puppets have secured a place in both religious and entertainment activities.
In addition to marionette and shadow puppets, glove puppetry (budaixi or zhangzhongxi, "palm theater") also flourished as an amusement in the southern regions of the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan.
Today, in primarily rural southern areas of mainland China, and especially in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore, where they are featured during celebrations such as the Hungry Ghost Festival, puppets are still essential elements of religious events.
