The Siege of Budapest   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
So began the Siege of Budapest and the destruction of Central Europe's "Pearl of the Danube." Unimaginable to all who lived in Budapest during this unfolding drama was that this first skirmish near the hospital would soon turn into one of the most frightful urban battles of World War II.
The weakening Soviet offensive, although having reached the Danube to the north and south of Budapest, broke against the hastily built-up Axis bridgehead.
What made Budapest unusual was that due to relatively benign Hungarian policies against the Jews preceding the German occupation in March 1944, the city was the only remaining urban area anywhere within Nazi-occupied Europe that had a substantial surviving Jewish population by December 1944.

Budapest is a great city, but it has some drawbacks that you should know about.

Loved Prague and Budapest, but Vienna just didn't do it for me. We enjoyed our tour of the Schonbrunn Palace and the Belvedere, as well as a concert at the Musicverein, but agree with TG that the food left a lot to be desired (I didn't even enjoy my Sacher torte).
Though Budapest has some beautiful attractions, and we did a grand cruise on the Danube, there were times when I felt I was traveling in the Communist bloc - heavy-looking buildings, balckened and dreary.
Budapest is very nice, has great historical sites from pre-Communist times, a strong sense of history and has made a tremendous revival since the Communists were tossed out.
