Socialism - Information, Resources, Links and Reference   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Socialism refers to a broad array of doctrines or political movements that envisage a socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to control by the community.
In this period, socialism emerged from a diverse array of doctrines and social experiments associated primarily with British and French thinkers—especially Robert Owen, Charles Fourier, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Louis Blanc, and Saint-Simon.
These social critics saw themselves as reacting to the excesses of poverty and inequality in the period, and advocated reforms such as the egalitarian distribution of wealth and the transformation of society into small communities in which private property was to be abolished.

  Socialism
Several forms of "socialism" are considered by those on the far left to be reformist or revisionist.
Many non-socialists use the expression "socialist economy" (or "socialization" of a sector of the economy) almost exclusively to refer to centralized control under government aegis: for example, consider the use of the term "socialized medicine" in the US by opponents of single-payer health care.
Another defect of socialism, according to its detractors, is its disregard for the role of private property in creating incentives that foster the sustainable use of resources.

Socialism was the last chance we had of defeating terrorism by transforming the conditions which give birth to it; and those who helped to send it packing - not least those among them whose offices are rather high off the ground - ought to be licking their lips for the taste of ashes.
Socialism may have seemed a dark threat to those with most to lose from it, but at least it is a secular, historically-minded, thoroughly modern creed, a ******* offspring of liberal enlightenment.
Socialism, taken in its historical form, is a theoretical superstructure over the civil society (I use this term in its Hegelian sense) taken as the socio-economic basis of the real human life out there.

According to Buddhadasa, the spirit or essence of socialism is rooted in nature (Thai: dhammajati ‘born of dhamma’) The state of nature in its pure sense is an example of pure socialism.
But, while Durkheim regards social tensions as the cause of the ever more diverse division of labor in society, which results in a progressly better civilization, Buddhadasa regards social tensions as the cause of social conflicts and crises which need to be solved by returning to the spirit of sharing and loving-kindness under dhammic socialism.

 The Worldliness Of Buddhism
In the version accepted by Theravada Buddhists, who are predominant in Southeast Asia, the Buddha was born Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the son of the ruler of the Sakya clan in the foothills of the Himalayas.
These years, says one Buddhist text, "were like time spent in endeavoring to tie the air into knots." Finally, after he collapsed during a long fast and was given up for dead by his followers, the Buddha abandoned this path.
Theravada Buddhists are said to be "original" Buddhists in that they adhere to the notion of the historical Buddha and the faith's early emphasis on monks striving for enlightenment.

Mudita and Individualism :: Mudita Journal
When I wrote about the relationship I perceive between mudita and individualism, I was aware that some Buddhists, who have something of a lien on the word “mudita” as one of the core practices in the Buddhist path, would likely be uncomfortable with my application of the word within the context of individualism.
A typical metaphor is that mudita is the attitude of a mother watching her child happily at play, while karuna is the attitude of a mother whose child is sick or hurt.
Still, I think Buddhists have often recognized (and contemporary Buddhists are especially apt to recognize) that some bare minimum of wealth is necessary, or at least extremely helpful, for alleviating craving.
